During the war

On 22 March 1864, he enlisted at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He was enlisted by J A Gregory. His enlistment was witnessed by W F Wampole, and was credited to the fifth ward. He was paid $300 in bounty. He was a private, assigned to company K of the 91st Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 2]

He is listed on two Muster and Descriptive Rolls of a detachment of US Vols forwarded for the 91st, dated 23 March 1864, and 31 March 1864 But his name is not taken up on of the regiment's company muster rolls.

VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT.
STATE OF Pennsylvania TOWN OF Philadelphia

I, Patrick Langan born in Majhob [???] Co in the State of Irland [sic] aged Twenty Six years, and by occupation a Blacksmith DO HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGE to have volunteered this Twenty Second day of March 1864, to serve as a Soldier in the Army of the United States of America, for the period of THREE YEARS, unless sooner discharged by proper authority: Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing, as are, or may be, established by law for volunteers. And I, Patrick Langan do solemnly swear, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the Rules and Articles of War.
