91st PA: Henry P Largay (or Larnay)

Henry P Largay (or Larnay)

Before the war

He was born in 1829/30, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, perhaps to Henry (or perhaps Daniel?) Largey and Ellen [unknown family name]. [sources: date: 9 (31 in 1861), 19 (19 in 1850), 20 (30 in 1860). place: 9, 19, 20. parents: 19 (Henry, Ellen), 20 (Danl, Ellen)]

In 1850, he may be the Henry Largey living in ward 7, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If so, he was a gas fitter, and was living with Henry and Ellen Largey (presumably his parents), and with Simon, John, James, Ellen, Francis, Susan, and Sarah J Largey (presumably siblings). [source: 19]

In 1860, he may be the Henry Larkey living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If so, he was a gas fitter, and was living with Daniel and Ellen Larkey (perhaps his parents?), and Simon, James, Ellen, Francis, Susan, and Sarah Larkey (presumably siblings), and two others. His two children, Frank and Mary Largey, were living in ward 15, with their mother Mary Rees and her family. [sources: 20, 21]

When he enlisted, he was a teamster. [source: 9]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He had small scars on his face, around his eyes. [source: 9]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 19 September 1861 or 21 September 1861. He enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private, initially in company C. [sources: 1 (co.I, 19 Sep), 1 (co.C, 21 Sep), 9 (21 Sep), 10 (19 Jul 62), 18 (21 Sep 1861, based on Nov-Dec co. I muster roll), 27 (co.I), 28 (co.I)]

He was transferred on 4 December 1861 to company I. [sources: 8, 9]

In December 1862, he contracted general debility, which continued until his discharge. He insisted on continuing to do duty although he was unfit for duty. As Lieutenant John S Donnell said, 'although he constantly remained on duty with the Company his condition was such that he should have become an inmate of some hospital[, and] the nature of the soldier was such that he persisted in remaining on duty with the Company although it was perceptible that he was unfit for active service'. And Lieutenant Adam H Murphy said that he 'did duty in a great many Cases when physically disqualified from performing it, having always tried to perform his duty as a soldier'. The company commanders often assigned him the lightest possible duty. [source: 18]

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 16]

On 5 September 1863, Sinex ordered him to report to his company for duty, because the regimental pack mules had been turned in. He was detailed as a teamster on 22 September 1863. [sources: 3, 4]

On 29 December 1863, he was detailed as cattle guard. [sources: 5, 6]

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist. On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave. [sources: 2, 7]

He mustered out on 26 September 1864 when his term expired. At this point, 'his system was completely broken down by general debility [and] diarrhoea'. He was a private. [sources: 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 27 (co.C), 28 (co.I)]

After the war

On 14 October 1864, he married Mary Reese [?]. She was born in 1837/38, in Pennsylvania. They had lived and cohabited together as man and wife for many years--at least as long as their children had been alive. (But they seem not to have been living together in 1860.) They had two children under sixteen when he died:

[sources: 18 (Bess or Ress?), 21 (Rees), 25 (4 children, 2 living, in 1900)]

On 19 January 1865, he died. He died of general debility. According to the physician who treated him for the last two weeks of his life, his 'whole system [was] completely shattered, + lungs affect, also bowels, and [they] appeared to have been so for some time'. [source: 18]

On 25 May 1868, his widow, Mary Largey, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension, under the Act of 14 July 1862 and the Act of 25 July 1866. Her post-office address was 1735 Pearl Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John S Donnell and Adam H Murphy testified supporting her application. Her application was approved on 10 May 1869, and she received $8 per month retroactive to 19 January 1865, and $2 per month additional for each child less than sixteen, retroactive to 25 July 1866. [sources: 15, 17, 18]

In 1870, his widow, Mary Largey, was living at 1735 Pearl Street, in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with their children Francis and Mary E. [sources: 22, 23]

On 13 December 1875, the Pension Bureau told the Pension Agent to suspend payment, undoubtedly because her attorney had * executed documents improperly. On 24 January 1876, the Pension Bureau told the Pension Agent to resume payment. [source: 18]

In 1880, his widow, Mary M Largey, was living at 2039 Carlton Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a washer woman. She was living with her son Francis (and with her sister Sarah Burgess and others). [source: 24]

In 1890, his widow, Mary Largay, was living at 2305 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had been wounded in the side. [source: 10]

In 1900, his widow, Mary Largay, was living at 2324 Shamokin Street, ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with Frank Largay (her son?), his children, and with Henry Cowley and others. [source: 25]

On 7 April 1909, his widow, Mary Largay, died, at 2320 Shamokin Street, ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of lobar pneumonia, with general arteriosclerosis contributing. On 9 April 1909, she was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 18, 26]

On 20 August 1909, reimbursement of Mary Largay's last expenses was allowed. Payment was made to Mary L Westcott, of 749 Bucknell Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 18]

Note on identification

Bates has Henry P Largy in company C (mustered in 21 September 1861, not accounted for), and Henry P Larnay in company I (mustered in 19 September 1861) (1). Since documents (2), (3), (4), and (5) have Largay in company I, I have assumed they are the same person.
