He was born on 27 May 1834, in Allegany County, Maryland, to Arnold and Mary Lashley. In 1850, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Arnold and Mary Lashly (presumably his parents), and with various others (presumably his siblings). He was a farmer. [source: 11]

In March 1856, he married Rachel Ritchey, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They had one known child:

In 1860, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Arnold and Mary Lashley (presumably his parents), and with Daniel, Sally, Isaac, Robert, and Mary Lashley (presumably his siblings). He was a farm laborer. [source: 6]

About 1862, he married Sarah Collins. She was born on 15 June 1835. They apparently had seven children:

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was drafted from the 16th congressional district. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864. He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company F. [sources: 1, 3, 4 (Sep 1861), 10, 12, 18]

He was discharged by special order on 16 or 25 December 1864. He was a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 2 (16 Dec), 4 (1 Jan 64), 7, 10, 12, 18]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Rantoul Township, Champaign County, Illinois. He was living with his wife Sarah, and children Isaac, Francis, Laura, and U Grant. He was a farmer, and owned $1,300 in real estate, and $300 in personal property. [source: 8]

In 1880, he was living in Iron Township, Iron County, Missouri. He was living with his wife Sarah, and children Joseph, I W, F A, Laura, Gary, H C, and Orris. He was a farmer. [source: 9]

In 1890, he was living in Iron Township, Iron County, Missouri (post office: Belleview). He had had an "eruption" and was blind in one eye. [source: 4]

On 14 August 1890, he applied successfully from Missouri for a pension. [sources: 5, 10]

On 14 March 1895, his wife, Sarah Lashly, died. She was buried in Edison Cemetery, Belleview, Iron County, Missouri. [source: 14]

In 1900, he was living in Iron Township, Iron County, Missouri. He was living with his children Laura, Frank, and Orvis, and his niece Lula Brady. He was a farmer. [source: 15]

On 16 March 1907, he again applied for a pension. [source: 10]

In 1910, he was living in Iron Township, Iron County, Missouri. He was living with his daughter Sarah. He was not working, and was living in a house (not on a farm). [source: 16]

He died on 25 January 1911, in Iron County, Missouri. He was buried in Edison Cemetery, Belleview, Iron County, Missouri. [sources: 10, 13]
