George Lathrop

Before the war

He was born in 1846/50, perhaps in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 3 (18 in 1865), 5 (20 in 1860), 10 (28 in 1880), 12 (Jan 1850). place: 3, 5, 10 (VA), 12 (SC)]

When he enlisted, he was a farmer, and was living in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. [source: 3]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on 14 January 1865. He was a private, apparently in company E. [sources: 1 (co. E), 2 (unassigned), 3 (co.E), 7 (unassigned), 8 (unassigned), 9 (unassigned)]

He was not on the muster-out roll. He was discharged on 6 June 1865, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 1 (not on muster-out roll), 3 (discharge handwritten on the typed card)]

He also served in company K of the 197th Pennsylvania, and in company I of the 11th and company E of the 29th US Infantry. [sources: 2, 4, 6]

After the war

On 25 July 1870, he married Mattie Walker, in Marion County, Texas. She was born in 1847/48, in Tennessee. They apparently had seven children, including these:

[sources: 5, 10, 12 (7 children 5 living in 1900), 13 (7 children 5 living in 1910), 17]

In 1870, he was living in Marion County, Texas. He was a millwright. He was living with his wife Mattie. [source: 5]

In 1880, he was living in Camp County, Texas. He was living with his wife Matha, and their children Arthur and George. He was a farmer. [source: 10]

In 1890, he was living in Marion County, Texas, post office address Kellyville. [source: 11]

He applied successfully for a pension from Texas on 8 August 1890. [sources: 2, 4, 6]

Effective 18 April 1902, his pension was increased to $12 per month, under the Act of 27 June 1890. The certificate was dated 10 December 1902. [source: 9]

On 8 March 1909, he informed the Pension Bureau that he had lost his pension certificate. On 28 May 1909, a new pension certificate was issued to him. [source: 9]

On 22 January 1910, he died. [source: 6 (30 Jan 13 [sic]), 9 (22 Jan 10)]

In 1910, his widow, Mattie Lathrop was living in ward 1, Jefferson, Marion County, Texas. She was living with her son Joe, and her widowed daughter Buelah Lest. She was the proprietor of a boarding house. [source: 13]

On 12 May 1910, the accrued pension that had not been paid was paid to someone, to cover the expenses of his illnesses and funeral. [source: 9]

On 19 March 1910, his widow, Mattie J Lathrop, applied successfully from Texas for a pension, under the Act of 19 April 1908. She received a pension of $12 per month, retroactive to 19 March. The pension certificate was issued on 12 May 1910. [sources: 2, 4, 6, 8]

At some point Mattie's pension was transferred to Knoxville, Tennessee. [source: 8]

On 6 October 1917, Mattie's pension was increased to $25 per month. [source: 8]

In 1920, his widow, Mattie Lathrop, was living at 41 Clyde Street, Asheville Township, Buncombe County, North Carolina. She was living with her son JH Lathrop and his family. [source: 14]

1850 US census
many George Lathrops born ca 1850 were living in the US, but none in or near Philadelphia
the George Lathrop I mention below under the 1860 US census was living in district 13, Chatham, Georgia (6 months, b.Georgia), with Joseph (38, born NH), Sarah (34, b. SC), and Joseph (6, b. NY) Lathrop (page 310 verso = 620 handwritten FamilySearch)
1860 US census
many George Lathrops born ca 1850 were living in the US, but none in or near Philadelphia
perhaps the George W Lathrop living in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware (10, born Georgia--see the 1910 census), with Joseph K (48, laborer, born New Hampshire) and Sarah A (44, born South Carolina) is an interesting candidate (page 489 = 95 handwritten, FamilySearch); this would make sense of the repeated references in the censuses to his having been born in the south, and his living in Delaware would make it easy to see how he could have moved to Philadelphia
Joseph and Sarah are presumably the Jos K (57, laborer, born Mass) and Sarah A (54, born SC) living in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, in 1870--they have no children living with them (FamilySearch)
