Before the war

He was born in 1826/27 (5 (34 in 1861)). He was born in Burlington, New Jersey (5).

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was a dealer, and owned $1500 in real estate and $500 in personal property (9). He was living with Mary Lewis (probably his wife) (9).

When he enlisted, he was a teamster (5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (5).

During the war

He was mustered into service on 12 September 1861 as a wagoner in company A (1 [private], 4, 7 [1862], 10 (wagoner), 11 (wagoner)).

He was discharged, at a hospital in Rhode Island, on 31 December 1862 (1, 2, 3) or 7 February 1863 (5) on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). He was then a teamster (3, 10 (private), 11 (pvt)).

After the war

On 19 January 1889, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 8).

He died on 26 April 1889, at Trenton, New Jersey [?] (6).

On 4 October 1889, his widow, Abbie Lewis, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 8).

A contesting widow, Eunica A Lewis, also filed for a pension, from New Jersey, but unsuccessfully (6, 8).

In 1890, his widow, Mary A Lewis, was living at 919 Master, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).
