John Mason

Before the war

On 9 February 1859, he married Elizabeth Luckey, at Washington Point, Pennsylvania. They apparently had no children. [source: 3]

On 18 June 1861, his house burned down, with the only record of his marriage. [source: 3]

During the war

On 25 March 1863, he was mustered into company K of the 94th Pennsylvania at Washington, Pennsylvania. [sources: 1 (K 91), 2 (K 91), 3]

On 18 December 1863, he died of 'lung fever'. [source: 3]

After the war

On 1 August 1865, his widow, Elizabeth Mason, applied unsuccessfully for a pension, from Morris, Grundy [?] County, Illinois, under the Act of 14 July 1862. The Pension Office was apparently unable to confirm his service. [sources: 1, 2]

Elizabeth Mason(nee Elizabeth Luckey), 23 years old, resident of Morris, Grundy [?] County, Illinois, applied for a pension under the act of 14 July 1862, based on the service of her husband John Mason K 94th [sic] PA, who was mustered in at Washington PA on 25 March 1863, and died at Memphis Tennessee on 18 December 1863 of 'Lung Fever which he contracted and [sic]' (image 7)
they were married on 9 February 1859 at Washington Point; the only record of the marriage was burned when her house burned on 18 June 1861; they have no children under 16 years of age (image 7)

the Adjutant General's Office (Washington DC) reported that the 94th PA was the 10th Pa Cavalry, and that they had no records of that regiment; it was supposed to have been transferred to a New York organization (image 4; see image 5 for the request, which lists Mason as serving in K 94th PA)

the Pension Office requested official evidence of John Mason's service in company K of the 91st PA (image 2)
