91st PA: Daniel E Mattix

Daniel E Mattix

Before the war

He was born in 1822/23, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. [sources: date: 2 (41 in 1864), 5 (36 in 1860), 8 (28 in 1850), 9 (45 in 1870). place: 2, 5, 8, 9]

In 1850, he was living in Galloway Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with David and Ann Mattix (presumably his parents), and with Ellen, Rebecca, William, Wheaton, Abagail, Mary, Luca Ann, David, and Margaret (perhaps all siblings). He was a sailor. [source: 8]

On 9 October 1852, he married Ann Goss, apparently in the First Presbyterian Church of Kensington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born in 1833/34, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these children:

[sources: 5, 9, 11]

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Ann (presumably his wife), and with Josephine, Robert, and Daniel (presumably their children). He was a waterman. [source: 5]

When he enlisted, he was a water[man] [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 4 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Burke. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 6]

He was transferred on 2 May 1864 to the US Navy. When he was transferred, he was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 24, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) wife Annie, and their (presumed) children Daniel and William. He was a seaman, and owned $200 in personal property. [source: 9]

From 1870 to 1874, he was a mariner, and lived at rear 1249 Sorrel Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 7]

Perhaps he is the Daniel Mattix who died on 10 June 1886, in Philadelphia Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 12 June 1886, at the University of Pennsylvania. (I assume his body was donated for anatomical study.) [source: 10]

[transcribed 2 January 2015, from FamilySearch)]
[I have no positive evidence connecting this Daniel with the one who served in the 91st, but I have no other candidates for being him; the key evidence I have against the identification is that Daniel drops out of the city directories earlier, and I haven't found him in the 1880 census either]
