William H Myers

Before the war

He married Maria [unknown family name]. She was born in 1838/39, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these three children:

In 1860, he was living in ward 12, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Maria (presumably his wife), and Fanny (presumably their daughter). He was a laborer. [source: 15]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. He had a scar over his right eye, and a blue star [?] on the back of his left hand. [source: 7]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 August 1861 . He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 7, 8, 9 (Lt Col Reiff), 18]

He was appointed corporal on 21 September 1861. [source: 4]

He was promoted from corporal to fifth sergeant on 24 December 1861, when Charles Evans was reduced to the ranks. [sources: 3, 4, 5]

He was discharged at Falmouth, Virginia, on 30 March 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability. He was then a sergeant in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 6, 9, 17, 18]

After the war

In 1870, he was living at 3 Coates Street, ward 12, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Maria (presumably his wife), with Fanny, William, and George (presumably their children), and with Maria Cole. He was a constable, and owned $500 in real estate. [sources: 13, 14]

In 1870-71, he was a constable, living at rear 341 Coates. [source: 16]

In 1872-73, he was a constable, living at 4 Kessler Place. (Kessler Place went north from 341 Coates Street.) [source: 16]

On 30 June 1872, he died, at Coates Street below 3rd, ward 12, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of delirium tremens. He was a constable when he died. He was buried in American Mechanics Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 10, 11, 12]
