Before the war

He was born in May 1843, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, perhaps to William H Meyers and Mary Ann [unknown surname]. In 1850, he was living in the Penn District, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Mary Ann Meyers (presumably his parents), with Virginia and Mary (presumably his siblings), and with Rachel C Mason. He had attended school within the year. [source: 7]

He was a laborer when he enlisted. [source: 3]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. [sources: 3, 25 (light complexion, grey eyes, black hair)]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 19 November 1861. He was enrolled for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant G Black. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [source: 23, 25]

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on writ of habeas corpus, because he was a minor. [sources: 23, 24, 25]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory. He was mustered in as a private in company H, by Lieutenant Hilderburn. [sources: 1, 3, 6, 26-27]

He was wounded on 14 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia. [sources: 1, 4]

He was discharged at a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 23 May 1865 because of those wounds, by order of the War Department. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 6, 26-27]

After the war

In 1862/63, he married Susan Weaver. She was born in 1833/35, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had one child:

On 30 June 1865, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 5, 6]

Probably in fall 1868, he was (probably) a driver, living at 602 Townsend, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

In 1870, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a teamster, and owned $200 in personal property. He was living with Susan (presumably his wife), Harry (presumably their child), and William (perhaps a sibling or cousin). [sources: 8, 20 (Susan and Harry only)]

Probably in fall 1870, he was a driver, living at 602 Townsend, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]

In 1880, he was living at 253 Firth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a driver. He was living with his wife Susan and son Harry. [source: 9]

Probably from fall 1881 through fall 1884, he was a driver, living at 253 Firth. [sources: 14, 15, 16]

Probably in fall 1896, he was a laborer, living at 2338 Pepper, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

Probably in fall 1898, he was a laborer, living at 2338 Albert, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 18]

Probably in fall 1899, he was a laborer, living at 2308 Albert, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 19]

In 1900, he was living at 210 Tioga Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son Henry and Henry's family. He was a laborer, and had been out of work 4 months in the previous year. [source: 10]

On 25 March 1900, his wife, Susan F Myers, died. She was buried at North Cedar Hill Cemetery. She was buried from 2338 East Albert Street, her husband's residence. [source: 21]

On 18 May 1902, he died, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of pneumonia. He died at, or was buried from, 1848 E Harold, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was married. On 21 May 1902, he was buried, at Cumberland Street Vault, to be buried later at North Cedar Hill. [sources: 11, 22]

Note on identification

I have combined two entries in Bates. The NPS index to the index to the compiled service records lists only one Winchester Myers. Further, as far as I can judge (based especially on the LDS pilot and Heritage Quest sites, including especially census indices, and also the LDS index to the Philadelphia death records), there was only one Winchester Myers who could have served in the 91st Pennsylvania.
