Before the war

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (3, 4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3, 4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3, 4). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 3, 4, 5, 7). He enlisted for one year at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3, 4). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (3, 4). He was a private in company B (1, 13).

He was wounded on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia (1, 4).

He was discharged on 9 May 1865, at Washington DC, on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 12). He was a private, in company B (13).

After the war

On 2 August 1865, he successfully applied for a pension (5, 6).

In 1865 or 1866, he married Mary A [unknown family name] (9). In 1900, she had had seven children, five of whom were alive (9).

In 1870, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Mary, his daughter Clara, and another person (8). He was a farm laborer, and owned $250 in personal property (8).

In 1890, he was living in Elmore, Ottawa County, Ohio (7). He reported one disability: he had been wounded in his right leg below his knee (7).

In 1900, he was living in Elmore Village, Harris Township, Ottawa County, Ohio (9). He was living with his wife Mary and son Edward (9). He was a day laborer, and had been out of work for 5 months in the previous year (9).

He again applied for a pension on 7 March 1907 (5).

In 1910, he was living in Harris Township, Ottawa County, Ohio (10). He was living with his daughter Clara and her family (10). He was a widower (10). He was living on his own income (10).

In 1920, he was living on Clinton Street, in Elmore Village, Harris Township, Ottawa County, Ohio (11). He was living with his daughter Clara and her family (11). He was not working (11).

He died on 12 August 1921, at Elmore, Ohio (5).
