When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had grey eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. [source: 2]

During the war

On 22 March 1865, he enlisted and was mustered into service as a private in the 91st, at Reading, [Berks County,] Pennsylvania. He was a substitute for Adam Gerhart, of the 20th subdistrict of the 8th Congressional District in Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 2]

He is listed on a Muster and descriptive roll of a detachment of drafted men and substitutes forwarded for the 91st Regiment Pennsylvania infantry, dated Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 25 March 1865. But he is not listed on any of the regiment's company muster rolls.
