Zachariah Oyler

Before the war

He was born in March 1830 (9; 2 (35 in 1865), 3 (40 in 1870), 4 (50 in 1880), 9 (70 in 1900)). He was born in Pennsylvania (3, 4, 9).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 2). He was mustered into service as a private on 28 February 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 5 [29 Feb], 8). He was a private, in company F (1, 10-11).

He was discharged by general order on 12 June 1865 (1, 2, 5, 8). He was a private, in company F (10-11).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office Bendersville) (3). He was living with Lenah (presumably his wife) and his children Clayton, Jonas, Jennie, Charles, and Margaret, along with an apprentice (3). He was a carpenter, who owned $2000 in real estate and $700 in personal property (3).

His wife died about 1876 (7).

In 1880, he was living in Bendersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with his children Clayton, Jennie, Jonas, Charles, and George, and also Mary Hinkel (4). He was a farmer (4). He was widowed (4).

On 7 June 1888, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 8).

In 1890, he was living in Menallen Township or Bendersville Borough (5). He did not report any disability (5).

In 1900, he was living in Bendersville Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania (9). He was widowed (9). He was living with his son George Oyler, George's family, and a boarder (9). He was a carpenter, but had been unemployed for 12 months in the previous year (9).

He again applied for a pension on 28 February 1907 (8).

On Wednesday, 5 June 1907, he died, in Bendersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania, of heart failure and pneumonia (7, 8 [1908]).

Mr. Zachariah Oyler died at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jonas Oyler, in Bendersville, Wednesday evening at 11:30. Heart failure and pneumonia were the cause of his death. Mr. Oyler was in his seventy-eighth year. His wife died thirty-one years ago. He is survived by three sons and one daughter.
