He was born on 8 August 1838 (5 (1838), 7 (Aug 1839), 14 (8 Aug 1838); 4 (23 in 1861), 6 (41 in 1880), 7 (60 in 1900)). He was born in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (4, 5, 6, 7, 14).
He was educated at Wickersham's Academy, in Marietta, Pennsylvania (5). He learned watchmaking and jewelry from George W McCauley, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (5).
He lived in Denver, Colorado, from 1859 to 1861 (5). He returned to the US in 1861 (5).
He was a watchmaker when he was enlisted (4).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light brown hair (4).
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 6 November 1861 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Murphy (4). He was a private in company G (1, 16).
On 19 March 1863, he returned to duty from Brigade headquarters (4).
He was wounded on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1, 10).
He mustered out when his term expired on 6 or 16 November 1864 (1 [16 Nov], 3 [6 Nov], 11). He was a private, in company G (16). (According to the pension index card, he also served in the Veterans' Reserve Corps (12).)
After the war, he lived in New York City for six years (5). He left because of his health (5).
He then lived in Centre County, Pennsylvania, until 1878 (5). In 1869/70, he married Margaret S [unknown family name] (7). She was born in July 1843, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had eight children, including these (6, 7 (8 children 4 alive in 1900)):
Because he preferred the West, he moved to Eureka, Kansas, in 1878 (5).
In 1880, he was living on Main Street, in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (6). He was living with his wife Maggie, his children Susie, Margie, Thomazine, and William and a niece (6). He was a jeweler (6).
In 1883, he was a member of the Board of City Councilmen (5). He was a jeweler (5). He was a leading member of the Methodist Episcopal Church (5). He was a Republican, but had never participated in politics except by voting (5).
On 14 May 1889, he applied successfully from Kansas for a pension (12, 13).
In 1900, he was living on Clay [?] Street, Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (7). He was living with his wife Margaret, and children Margie and William (7). He was a jeweler, and had not been unemployed in the previous year (7).
On 11 August 1908, he again applied for a pension (13).
He died on 30 December 1909 (13 [1910], 14 [30 Dec 1909]). He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (14).
On 10 January 1910, his widow, Maggie S Peters, applied successfully from Kansas for a pension (12, 13).
In 1910, his widow, Margaret S Peters, was living on Third Street, in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (8). She was living with her son William and his family (8).
In 1920, his widow, Margaret S Peters, was living at 800 Third Street, Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (9). She was living with her son William and his family (9).
His widow, Margaret S Peters, died on 29 May 1928 (15). She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas (15).
