Before the war

On 12 September 1861, he married Barbara Magdalena Hoerner, in Linglestown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. She was born on 14 May 1846, in South Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to Peter Hoerner and Susanna Brenneman. They apparently had thirteen children, including these:

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-3/8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

In June 1863, he registered for the draft. He was living in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was a miller. [source: 13]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 January 1864 or 18 January 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1 (8 Jan), 2, 5 (18 June 1863), 18-20]

In August 1864, he was tried by court martial. [source: 12]

On 6 September 1864, he returned to the regiment from being absent in arrest. He may have been in arrest since 9 June 1864 or earlier. [sources: 9, 10]

He was wounded on 30 September 1864 at Peeble's Farm, Virginia. [source: 1]

He was discharged by general order on 22 June 1865. He was a private, in company A. [sources: 1, 5, 18-20]

After the war

He had moved to Missouri by 1868, when his daughter Barbara was born in Missouri. [source: 6]

In 1870, he was living in South Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Barbara, and children Susan, Elizabeth, Mary, and William. He was a farmer, and owned $2,000 in real estate and $700 in personal property. [source: 14]

On 28 April 1880, he applied successfully for a pension. [source: 3]

In 1880, he was living in Briton Township, Washington County, Missouri. He was a teamster. He was living with his wife Emma [?], and his children Barbara, William George, Charles, Agnes, Sarah, and Minnie. [source: 6]

In 1890, he was living in Brinton City, Audrain County, Missouri. [source: 5]

In 1900, he was living in Loutra Township, Audrain County, Missouri. He was a farmer. He was living with his wife Barbara and children Minnie, Julia, and Harry. [source: 7]

He died on 3 November 1902. He was buried in the Benton City Cemetery, Benton City, Audrain County, Missouri. [sources: 3, 16]

His widow applied successfully for a pension. [source: 3]

In 1910, his widow was living in Loutra Township, Audrain County, Missouri. [source: 8]

In 1920, his widow, Barbara Rhoades, was living in Loutre Township, Audrain County, Missouri. [source: 11]

On 18 March 1928, his widow, Barbara Rhoades, died, in Benton City, Audrain County, Missouri. She was buried in the Benton City Cemetery, Benton City, Audrain County, Missouri. [sources: 15, 17]
