Before the war

His father taught him the millwright trade (4). He moved to a farm at Waterloo, Pennsylvania (4).

He married Sarah J Barton in 1850 (4, 7). She was born in December 1826, in Pennsylvania (12). They had eight children (4):

In 1860, he was living in Lack Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Sarah and children James, Jesse, Margaret, John, George, and Mary (9). He was a farmer, and owned $300 in personal property (9).

Description

when he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and black hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 September 1864 (1, 2, 3, 5, 8). He was enlisted for one year, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (2, 3). His enlistment was credited to the 14th congressional district (2, 3). He was a private in company C (1, 15-16).

He was discharged by general order on 19 June 1865 (1, 5, 8). He was a private, in company C (15-16+).

After the war

He lived on a farm near McCulloch's Mills (4).

In 1870, he was living in Lack Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Sarah, and children James, Jesse, Margaret, John, George, Mary, Elizabeth, David, and Jane, along with Margaret Barton (10). He was a farmer, and owned $7,000 in real estate and $800 in personal property (10).

On 13 June 1875, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 8).

In 1880, he was living in Lack Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Sarah, children George, Lizzie, and David, and with Margaret Barton (11). He was a farmer (11).

In December 1884, he was hurt by a falling frame, as he and others helped Michael Crouse build a new barn (13).

In 1890, he was living in Lack Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (post office: Waterloo) (5). He had had chronic diarrhea (5).

In 1900, he was living in Lack Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Sara and granddaugter Maud (12). He was a pensioner (12).

His wife, Sarah J Rice, died in 1903 (7).

He held several township offices, and was a Juniata County commissioner (4). He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, McCulloch's Mills (4).

He died on 20 June 1905, in Waterloo, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (4, 8). He was buried in the Upper Tuscarora Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Waterloo, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (4, 7).
