91st PA: Owen Roberts

Owen Roberts

Before the war

He was born in 1839/40, in New York, New York. [source: date: 1 (23 in 1863), 5 (23 in 1863). place: 1, 5]

When he enlisted, he was a driver. [source: 5]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair. [sources: 1, 5 (red hair)]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered in as a private in company F of the 118th Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 31 July 1863, for three years. His enlistment was credited to the third congressional district. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

He is listed on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of a Detachment of Drafted Men and Substitutes forwarded for the 118th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry, dated 3 August 1863, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 5]

He was listed as present on the July-August 1863, September-October 1863, and November-December 1863 muster rolls for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [source: 5]

He was listed as present on the January-February 1864 muster roll for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was a guard on the Division Teams. He had never received the US advance bounty of $25. (I do not know why he was owed a bounty, since he was drafted.) [source: 5]

He was listed as present on the March-April 1864 muster roll for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. He had never received the US advance bounty of $25. [source: 5]

He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, on 19 June 1864. He was listed as absent on the May-June 1864 and July-August 1864 muster rolls for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 2, 3, 5]

He was listed as absent sick, in hospital, at Washington DC, on the September-October 1864, November-December 1864, and January-February 1865 muster rolls for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [source: 5]

He was listed as present on the March-April 1865 muster roll for company F of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [source: 5]

He was apparently transferred to company C of the 91st Pennsylvania, by general order 26, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac. His clothing account hadn't been settled, and he had drawn $54.19. He had last been paid through 29 February 1864. However, he was not listed on any company muster rolls in the 91st Pennsylvania (though he is listed in company C's descriptive book). [source: 1, 5]
