John Rusk

Before the war

He was born in 1842/43 (7 (19 in 1862), 8 (19 in 1862), 9 (19 in 1862), 13 (16 in 1860), 14 (8 in 1850)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8, 9, 13, 14).

In 1850, he was living in Penn District, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with Samuel and Eliza Rusk (presumably his parents), and with various others, presumably siblings (and in-laws) (14). He had attended school within the year (14).

In 1860, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with Samuel and Elizabeth Rusk (presumably his parents), and with Mathias, Thomas, Elizabeth, Barbara, Samuel, George, and Elbert Rusk (presumably siblings) (13). He was an apprentice brass founder (13).

When he enlisted, he was a butcher, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8, 9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, and had a light complexion, light eyes, and dark hair (7, 8, 9).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 15 January 1862 (1, 7, 8, 9). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Sinex (7, 8, 9). He was mustered in service as a private, in company D, by Lieutenant JB Diehl (1, 7, 9, 15).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 17 February 1864 (1, 9). He was reenlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9).

He was promoted from private to corporal on 28 April 1864 (4, 6 [1 March 1864], 8 [1 Mar]).

He was wounded on 21 June 1864 (1, 5, 8). He died at City Point, Virginia, on 22 or 23 June 1864, of those wounds (1 [22 Jun], 2, 5 [23 Jun], 6 [23 Jun], 8, 9 [22 Jun], 10 [23 Jun]). He was a corporal (15 (co.G)).

He was buried at City Point National Cemetery, Virginia, section E (2).

After the war

His mother, Elizabeth Rusk, applied successfully for a pension on 6 March 1879 (3, 12 [unsuccessful]).

although Samuel is alive and Elizabeth applied for a pension in 1879, Samuel is listed as having had a 'Paralytic stroke' (also note that the John Rusk 38 brickmaker living at 1705 Camac Street, ward 20, Philadelphia (microfilm series T9, film 1180, page 346 = 16 D handwritten) is living with his brother Clark, 34--who is not in the 1850 or 1860 censuses transcribed below, and who is apparently the Clark Rusk living in 1850 with John and Margaret Rusk et al. in the Penn District of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (pages 114 verso = 230 handwritten to 115 recto = 231 handwritten)
