He was born in Germany (8, 9 [Bavaria], 10 [Prussia], 11 [Germany], 12 [Germany], 13 [Germany], 14 [Germany]). He was born to Henry Seher (8).

He immigrated in 1845 (13) or 1850 (14). He was a naturalized citizen by 1870 (10, 13, 14).

In 1860, he was living in ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Henry Seher (presumably his father) and others (9). He was a barber (9). He was (probably) living at 152 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

During the war

The pension index card refers to Harry Sassman, who served in company G of the 213th Pennsylvania Infantry (7).

He was drafted (1, 3, 4). He was mustered into service as a private in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry, on 17 July 1863 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4, 5 [10 Sep 63], 18). He was a private in company D of the 118th Pennsylvania (3, 7, 18).

He was captured at Wilderness, Virginia, on 8 May 1864 (3).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania to company F of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4 [1 Jun 65]). He was a private in company F of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 18, 19).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 5 [13 Jul 65], 18). He was a private, in company F (19).

After the war

In 1870, he was living at 2420 Frankford Avenue, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 16). He was living with Caroline (presumably his wife), and with Caroline, Harry, and Herman (presumably their children), along with two others (10). He was a barber (10, 16). He owned $12,500 in real estate and $600 in personal property (10).

In 1880, he was living at 117 West Thompson Street, ward 17, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11, 16). He was living with his wife Caroline, and children Caroline, George and Harry (11). He was an undertaker, with the firm of Davis & Seher, at 2420 Frankford Avenue and 117 Thompson Street (11, 16).

In 1881, he was an undertaker, and 170 Huntingdon and at 2119 North Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1882-83, he was an undertaker, at 2119 North Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1884-85, he was an undertaker, at 310 Otis Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

On 26 March 1885, his wife, Caroline Seher, died (15). She died of pneumonia (15). She died at, or was buried from, 2009 Otis Street (15). She was buried at North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15).

In 1886, he was an undertaker, at 2009 Otis Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1889, he was an undertaker, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1890, he was living at 2009 Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 16). He was an undertaker (16).

In 1890, he married Emma Rebecca Sassman (12, 14, 17). In 1900 and 1910, she had had five children, three of whom were alive (12, 14). This was the second marriage for both of them (14).

In 1897-1899, he was an undertaker, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1900, he seems to have been living in two different places. He was living on Jarrett Avenue, Rockledge Borough, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, with his wife Emma and daughter Lucy Canter (12). He was also living at 2011 Susquehanna Avenue, ward 31, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his wife Emma, children Harry, Frank, and Lucy, and stepchildren William, Charles, and Ida Sassmann (13, 16). He was an undertaker (12, 13, 16).

In 1901-04, he was an undertaker, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, and living at 2011 Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1905, he was living in Rockledge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (16). He was an undertaker, with Henry Seher & Sons, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1906-07, he was living at 2011 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was an undertaker, with Henry Seher & Sons, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

On 13 May 1907, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).

In 1908-09, he was living at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was an undertaker, with Henry Seher & Sons, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

In 1910-11, he was living at 30 Jarrett Avenue, Rockledge Borough, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (14, 16). He was living with his wife Emma (14). He was an undertaker (14), with Henry Seher & Sons, at 2009 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

On 7 October 1912, he died, of pulmonary tuberculosis, at Rockledge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (2, 7, 8). He was an undertaker (8). He last lived at 20 Jarrett Avenue, Rockledge, Pennsylvania (8). On 12 October 1912, he was buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania (2, 8, 18). He was buried from 2011 East Susquehanna Avenue, Pennsylvania (8). His grave has a Grand Army of the Republic marker on it (18).

On 19 October 1912, his widow, Emma R Seher, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
