Samuel W Seybert

Before the war

He was born in November 1843 (11; 6 (19 in 1863), 7 (19 in 1863), 10 (66 in 1910), 11 (56 in 1900), 12 (27 in 1870), 13 (16 in 1860), 14 (8 in 1850), 15 (35 in 1880)). He was born in Pennsylvania (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15).

In 1850, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with Sebastian and Mary Seybert (presumably his parents), and Jacob, Susannah, Margaret, Eliza, and Emmy (presumably his siblings) (14). He was attending school (14).

In 1860, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a day laborer, and had attended school within the year (13). He was living with Sebastian and Mary Seybert (probably his parents) and Eliza and Emma Seybert (probably his siblings) (13).

When he enlisted, he was a boatman (6, 7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (6, 7).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 5 [drafted], 6, 7). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 31 August 1863 in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 6, 7, 18 [30 Aug]). He was enlisted for three years (6, 7). His service was credited to the 23rd congressional district (6, 7). He was a private, in company M (19, 22).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company M of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st (1, 17). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3). He was a private, in company K, of the 91st (1, 3, 19, 21).

On 28 October 1864, he was present when John Hamilton (K) was wounded in the skirmish line (20).

On 3 July 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 July 1865 (1, 4, 5).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 18). He was a corporal in company K (19, 21).

After the war

In 1866/67, he married Parthena [unknown family name] (10, 11 [34 years in 1900]). In 1910, his wife had had 10 children, six of whom were alive (10, 11 [2/2 in 1900]).

On 5 April 1867, he swore that John Hamilton (K) was wounded in the left side, in the line of duty, on 28 October 1864 (20). Seybert was living in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (20).

In 1870, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (12). He was a laborer, and owned $500 in real estate and $100 in personal property (12). He was living with his wife Parthena, and children Annie and Osa (12).

On 29 April 1884, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 18).

In 1880, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (15). He was a laborer (15). He was living with his wife Parthena, his children Anna Mary, O, H.W., K.D., O.M., Ella D., and with his mother Mary (15).

In 1890, he was living in Perry, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (9). He had a lame back (9).

In 1900, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer (11). He was living with his wife Parthena, and children Herman and Ella (11).

In 1910, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a laborer, at a brick works (10). He was out of work 4 weeks in 1909 (10). He was living with his wife Parthena (10).

He died on 2 March 1919, at West Montery, [Clarion County,] Pennsylvania (18).

On 31 March 1919, his widow, Parthena Seybert, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 18).

In 1920, his widow, Parthena Sybert, was living on Millers Eddy, in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (16). She owned the house, free of any mortgage (16).

In 1930, his widow, Parthena Seybert, was living on Millers Eddy, Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (17). She owned the house, which was worth $1,200 (17). She was living with her son Herman and his family (17).
