91st PA: Henry A Sheaff

Henry A Sheaff

Before the war

He was born on 6 October 1827 (12, 17; 4 (32 in 1861), 10 (83 (?) in 1910), 13 (21 in 1850), 14 (33 in 1860), 15 (40 in 1870), 16 (53 in 1880), 17 (72 in 1900)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). He was born to David H Sheaff and Maria R Kucher (12).

In 1850, he was living in West Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with David and Maria Sheaff (presumably his parents) and others (13). He was a painter (13).

In 1860, he was living in the 24th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with Anna (presumably his wife), Charles, Harry, David, Elizabeth, and Anna (presumably their children) (14). He was a house painter, and owned $200 in personal property (14). (The fact that he had an 11-year living with him makes me suspect I have the wrong Henry Sheaf in 1850.)

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 27 September 1861 (1, 2, 4, 7 [Dec 1861]). He was mustered in as a private, in company D (1, 4, 18-19).

He was promoted to corporal (4).

He was discharged at Alexandria, Virginia, on 22 August 1862 for promotion to second lieutenant (1, 2, 3, 4 [14 Aug 62]). He was a corporal in company I (1, 3, 18 (co.I), 19 (co. D)).

He also served in company E of the 198th Pennsylvania Infantry (5, 7, 8). He was mustered into service on 29 August 1864 (6, 7 [16 Aug 64]). He was promoted from first sergeant to second lieutenant on 29 April 1865 (6). He mustered out with his company on 4 June 1865 (6, 7 [3 Jun]).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 26th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a painter, and owned $1,800 in personal property (15). He was living with Annie (presumably his wife), and Charles, Harry, David, Edward, Lizzie, Annie, and Alice (presumably their children) (15).

In 1874/75, he married Anna J [unknown family name] (10, 17 [1876/77]). This was his second marriage and her first (10). In 1900, she reported having had no children (17).

In 1880, he was living at 1242 Clarion Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was living with his wife Annie (16).

On 7 January 1889, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).

In 1890, he was living at 923 Hazlewood, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).

In 1900, he was living at 2207 Pemberton Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). He was living with his wife Annie (17). He was a house painter (17).

On 12 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (9).

In 1910, he was living in ward 30, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Anna J (10). He was not working (10).

He died on 19 October 1913, at 2051 Pembertson Street, 30th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9, 12). He died of cystitis and senility, with old age contributing (12). He was a painter (12). On 22 October 1913, he was buried at Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (12).

On 24 October 1913, his widow, Annie Sheaff, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).

In 1920, his widow, Anna Sheaff, was living at 2015 Catherine Street, ward 30, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). She was a lodger, with Samuel H Glaagon (11).
