Before the war

He was born in 1828/39 (2 (34 in 1863), 4 (31 in 1860), 5 (22 in 1850), 6 (40 in 1870), 16 (39 at death in 1871)). He was born in Medford, New Jersey (2, 4 (Philadelphia), 5 (NJ), 18 (Philadelphia)). He was born to Henry Simmons Shinn and Elizabeth M Dillon (18, 19).

In 1850, he was living in ward 3, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was a bricklayer (5).

Probably in 1855-56, he was a bricklayer, living at 56 Myrtle, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8).

Probably in 1857, he was a bricklayer, living at 1210 Myrtle, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9).

Probably in 1859, he was a bricklayer, living at 1210 Ogden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10).

In 1860, he was living in the 14th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with Rebecca (presumably his wife), and with Anna, Mary, and Sallie Wallace (4). He was a bricklayer, and owned $300 in personal property (4).

Probably in 1861, he was a bricklayer, living at 1128 Parrish, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).

When he enlisted, he was a bric[k] lay[er] (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 2, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 13 July 1863 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for three years (2). His enlistment was credited to the fourth congressional district (2). He was a private in company C of the 118th Pennsylvania (3).

On 14 April 1865, his presumed wife, Rebecca, seems to have died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). She died at, or was buried from 1128 Purrish [sic; presumably Parrish] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). On 17 April 1865, she was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to company C of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 3). He was a private in company C of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 20).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private, in company C (20).

After the war

Probably in 1866-68, he was living at 268 North 4th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12, 13). Probably in 1866, he was a bricklayer (12). Probably in 1868, he was a plumber (13).

In 1870, he was living in ward 13, Philaelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with Anna (presumably his wife) and Frank (presumably their child) (6).

Probably in 1870-71, he was a bricklayer (14, 15). Probably in 1870, he was living at rear 469 Franklin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). Probably in 1871, he was living at rear 459 Franklin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15).

On 8 June 1871, he died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16 [8 June 1871], 18 [1872], 19 [1872]). He had no children (19).

1 (3) Henry Simmons Shinn (7), b. 2/10/1805; ob. at Magnolia Station, Md., 2/27/1873; m., 2/7/1828, Elizabeth M., daughter of James and Rachel Dillon, and had two sons:

1. Mordecai Shinn (8), d. in Philadelphia, 1872, without issue.

2. Henry S. Shinn (8), moved to Iowa; m. there and reared a family.
