George A Souders

Before the war

He was born in 1837/38 (9 (24 in 1862, 26 in 1864), 13 (26 in 1864)). He was born in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania (13).

He was living in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania (9 [Columbia PA in 1862]).

When he enlisted in the 135th Pennsylvania in 1862, he was a car builder (9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (13).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in the 2nd Pennsylvania infantry on 18 April 1861 (6, 7, 9, 14, 16). He was mustered into service as second corporal in company F (6 [1st lt], 7 [2d corp], 9). The company was recruited at Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was mustered in on 20 April 1861 (7). He was discharged on 20 July 1861 (6). The company mustered out on 26 July 1861, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (7).

He enlisted in company K of the 155th Pennsylvania infantry at Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 28 July 1862 (9 [135?], 14, 16 [135th]). He was mustered into service as second lieutenant in company K on 6 August 1862 or 12 August 1862, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (6 [12 Aug], 7 [6 Aug], 9 [6 Aug]). He was promoted to first lieutenant on 1 January 1863 (7, 8, 9).

He mustered out on 24 May 1863 with his company (6 [10 May], 7 [24 May], 8 [24 May], 9).

He enlisted in the 91st Pennsylvania on 13 February 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was enlisted for three years, by Lieutenant Burke (13). He was mustered into service on 13 February 1864 (1, 6 [15 June], 9 [as sgt]). He was a private, in company I (1, 17).

An order promoting him to sergeant on 16 February 1864 was apparently not issued (3). He was promoted from private to sergeant on 9 or 11 March 1864 (4, 11 [11 Mar]).

On 26 February 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 13 March 1865 (5). He was declared absent without leave on 15 March 1865 (15). But he returned on the same day, 15 March 1865 (5).

He was discharged on 26 May 1865 for promotion, by order of Brevet Major General Griffin (12, 13). He was promoted on 26 May 1865 to second lieutenant (1, 2, 9, 10). He was mustered in by Captain Chamberlein, in accordance with special order 115, Headquarters, 5th Army Corps (10).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 2, 6 [24 June]). He was in company I (17 (sgt)).

After the war

In 1890, he was living at 534 North 32nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6).

On 14 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).

On 28 December [?] 1902, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).

He died on 17 November 1902 (16).
