Daniel Schoedler or Stahdler

Before the war

He was born on 17 January 1842 (7, 9) or 29 July 1844 (13; 2 (20 in 1863), 6 (38 in 1880), 7 (58 in 1900), 8 (76 in 1920), 10 (25 in 1870), 11 (16 in 1860), 12 (7 in 1850)). He was born in Reading, [Berks County,] Pennsylvania (2, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12). He was born to Daniel Schadler and Ellen ("Nellie") Dilplain (10, 11, 12, 13).

On 1 October 1848, he was baptized, in Mertz Church, Dryville, Rockland Townshipp, Berks County, Pennsylvania (13).

In 1850, he was living in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with Daniel and Ellen Schaeder (presumably his parents), with David, Reuben, Elizabeth, Wilmina, Maria, and Hilaria [??] (presumably his siblings) (12).

In 1860, he was living in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with Daniel and Ellen Shaedler (presumably his parents), and with David, Wilmina, Maria, and Emma (presumably siblings) and John Dilplen (11).

When he enlisted, he was a labo[rer] (2).

Description

when he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 2, 3). He enlisted for three years and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 12 November 1863 (1, 2, 3, 4, 9). His enlistment was credited to the eighth congressional district (2). He was a private in company C of the 118th Pennsylvania (3, 4).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to company C of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 3). He was a private in company C of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 14).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 4, 9). He was a private, in company C (14).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Daniel and Nellie Schoedler (presumably his parents), and with David (presumably a sibling) and John Richard (10). He was working in a saw mill (10).

In 1880, he was living in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (6). He was a boarder, with Benjamin Seidel (6). He was a laborer (6). (The children present in the 1900 census suggest I may have the wrong person here.)

In 1882/83, he married Susan [unknown family name] (7). In 1900, she had had 8 children 7 of whom were alive (7).

On 23 September 1890, he successfully applied for a pension from Pennsylvania (4, 5).

In 1900, he was living in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Susan, and children Charles, Harvey, Edwin, Katie, and Sallie (7). He was a farm laborer (7). He had been unemployed for four months in the previous year (7).

In 1902, he was living in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (8). He was widowed (8). He was living with his wife Katie and her family (8).

He again applied for a pension on 25 February 1907 (4).

He died on 31 December 1922, at Oley, Pennsylvania (4, 9). He was buried in Friedens Cemetery, Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (9).
