Hosea Stansbury

Before the war

He was born in October 1841 (11, 14; 2 (23 in 1865), 3, 7 [8 in 1850], 8 [18 in 1860], 9 [27 in 1870], 10 [37 in 1880], 11 [58 in 1900], 12 [68 in 1910], 14 [27 in 1869], 15 [69 at death in 1910]). He was born in Monongalia County, West Virginia (2, 3, 7 [VA], 8 [VA], 9, 10 [VA], 11, 12, 14). He was born to David and Mary Stansberry (14).

In 1850, he was living in Monongalia County, Virginia (7). He was living with David and Mary Stanberry (presumably his parents), and with Rachel, Hannah, Emily, and Sarah (presumably his siblings) (7). He had attended school within the year (7).

In 1860, he was living in Monongalia County, Virginia (8). He was living with Daniel and Mary Stansberry (presumably his parents), and with Zilla, Mary, and Margaret (presumably his siblings) (8).

When he enlisted, he was a boatman (2, 3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and black hair (2, 3).

During the war

He also served in company A of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry (5, 6).

He was a substitute for W Toner or Garner (1, 2, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 22 February 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Brinten or Brighton, Pennsylvania, by Cathburton (2, 3). He was a private in company K (1, 16-17). His service was credited to the 92nd subdivision of the 24th congressional district (2, 3).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private (16-17).

After the war

On 22 July 1869, he married Lucinda Warman (11 [31 years in 1900], 12 [40 years in 1910], 14). He was a farmer (14). They were married by James Miller (14). In 1900 and 1910, she had had no children (11, 12).

In 1870, he was living in Clinton Township, Monongalia County, West Virginia (9). He was living with his wife Lucinda (9). He was a farmer (9).

In 1880, he was living in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia (10). He was living with his wife Lucinda and sister Emma (10). He was a jailor, for the Monongalia County Jail, which had no prisoners on 1 June (10).

On 12 June 1885, he applied successfully for a pension (5, 6).

In 1890, he was living in Morgan, Monongalia County, West Virginia (4). He had a diseased lung (5).

In 1900, he was living in South Morgantown, Monangolia County, West Virginia (11). He was living with his wife Lucinda (11). He was a day laborer, and had been unemployed for 6 months in the previous year (11).

In 1910, he was living on Bridge Street, in ward 1, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia (12). He was living with his wife Lucinda (12). He was living on his own income (12).

He died of paralysis, on 31 July 1910, in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia (6, 15). He was married (15).

On 27 August 1910, his widow, Lucinda Stansbury, applied successfully from West Virginia for a pension (5, 6).

In 1920, his widow, Lucinda Stansberry, was living at 20 Douley Street, ward 1, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia (13). She was living with a roomer (13).
