Before the war

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 2 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lehman. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [sources: 1, 2, 15]

After the war

In 1872/73, he married Sarah Saltzer. She was born in November 1855, in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. They had four known children:

In 1880, he was living in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah and son Charles. He was a blacksmith, and had been out of work for 4 months in the previous year. [source: 4]

He again applied for a pension on 25 February 1907. [source: 3]

On 30 April 1907, he died, in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia, with influenza contributing. He was a blacksmith. On 4 May 1907, he was buried in Calvary Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 3, 5, 6, 8, 10]

On 11 May 1907, his widow, Sarah Starnowsky, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 3, 7]

On 14 January 1918, his son Harry Albert Starnowsky married Flora May Lewis, in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. [source: 9]

In 1920, his widow Sarah Starnowsky was living in Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her son Harry. [source: 14]
