Description

He was born on 13 June 1842, to Charles and Christina Stiefel (6 (Jun 1844), 11; 2 (22 in 1864), 4 (38 in 1880), 6 (55 in 1900), 7 (67 in 1910), 8 (78 in 1920), 9 (87 in 1930)). He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11). He was born to Charles and Christina Stiefel (11).

He immigrated in 1863 (6 [1869], 7 [1867], 8 [1865], 9 [1854], 11 [1863]).

When he enlisted, he was a shoe[maker?] (2).

His brother also served in the 91st, under the name Godfried Sterle (12).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 October 1864 (1, 2, 13). He was enlisted for one year, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (2). His service was credited to the Fourteenth Congressional District (2). He was a private in company H (1, 14).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 13). He was a private, in company H (14).

After the war

He moved to Lyon County, Minnesota, in 1869 (11).

In 1880, he was living in Lyon, Lyon County, Minnesota (4). He was a farmer (4). He was single (4).

In 1881, he married Jane Ann (Jennie) Jones (6, 7, 9, 11). In 1900, she had had eight children, seven of whom were alive (6). In 1910, she had had eight children, six of whom were alive (7). They had these children: Charles, Kate, William, Damie, Louise, Christine, Lavina, Jennie (11).

In 1890, he was living in Lyons, Lyons County, Minnesota (5).

On 10 June 1898, he applied successfully from Minnesota for a pension (3, 13).

In 1899/1900, their brother in Aich, Germany, declared David and his brother Godfried dead--perhaps they had stopped writing, or perhaps he benefited from their death (by gaining an inheritance?) (12).

In 1900, he was living in Coon Creek Township, Lyon County, Minnesota (6). He was living with his wife Jennie, and his daughters Jennie, Jamie, Louisa, Crestina, and Lavinna (6). He was a farmer (6). He was a naturalized citizen (6).

On 16 March 1907, he again applied for a pension (13).

He farmed in Lyons County until he moved to Russell in 1910 (11). He lived in Russell until he died (11).

In 1910, he was living in Russell Village, Lyon County, Minnesota (7). He was living with his wife Jennie and daughter Louisa (7). He was living on his own income (7).

In 1920, he was living in Russell Village, Lyon County, Minnesota (8). He was living with his wife Jane and daughter Louisa (8). He had no occupation (8).

In 1930, he was living on High Street, Russell Village, Lyon County, Minnesota (9). He was living with his daughter Louisa and her husband Mynard Burt (9). He was retired (9). He was a widower (9).

He died on 29 December 1938, in Russell, Lyon County, Minnesota (10, 11).
