91st PA: Godfried (Gottlieb?) Steifel alias Sterle

Godfried (Gottlieb?) Steifel alias Sterle

Name

He enlisted under the alias 'Godfried Sterle' (3).

Before the war

He was born in December [?] 1843 (7; 2 (20 in 1864), 5 (25 in 1870), 6 (36 in 1880), 7 (56 in 1900), 8 (67 in 1910)). He was born in Wurttemburg, Germany (2, 5, 6, 7, 8).

He immigrated in 1849 (7, 8 [1850 (?)], 9).

When he enlisted, he was a carp[enter?] (2).

His brother also served in the 91st, under the name David Sterle (12).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 October 1864 (1, 2). He was enlisted for one year, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (2). His service was credited to the Fourteenth Congressional District (2). He was a private in company H (1, 11).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private, in company H (11).

After the war

In 1868/69, he married Louisa [unknown family name] (7, 8). In 1900, she had had eight [?] children, five [?] of whom were alive (7). In 1910, she had had eight children, four of whom were alive (8).

In 1870, he was living in Johnson Township, Gibson County, Indiana (5). He was living with his wife Louisa and child Amelia (5). He was a farmer, and owned $2,800 in real property, and $700 in personal property (5). He was a US citizen (5).

On October 1887, he applied successfully from Ohio for a pension (4, 10).

In 1880, he was living in Johnson Township, Gibson County, Indiana (6). He was living with his wife Louisa, and children Amelia, Willis, Albert, and George (6). He was a farmer (6).

In 1899/1900, their brother in Aich, Germany, declared David and his brother Godfried dead--perhaps they had stopped writing, or perhaps he benefited from their death (by gaining an inheritance?) (3).

In 1900, he was living in Union Township, Gibson County, Indiana (7). He was living with his wife Louisa, and children Albert, George [?], and a daughter whose name I can't read (7). He was a farmer (7).

According to the pension index by regiment, he died in 1907 (10). I do not know whether this date is a mistake.

In 1910, he was living in Union Township, GIbson County, Indiana (8). He was living with his wife Louise and a servant (8). He was a farmer (8).

In 1920, he was living on Race Street, in Johnson Township, Gibson County, Indiana (9). He was living with his wife Louisa (9). He was not working (9).
