When he enlisted, he was a waterm[an] (4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (3, 4, 5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 29 January 1864 (1, 3, 4, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Shipley (3, 4, 5). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant Brooks (1, 3, 4 [Brooke], 5, 10).

He was discharged in July 1864 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent sick (8). He was again reported absent, in hospital, at the end of June 1865 (9). He was a private, in company K (10).

After the war

In 1890, he was living at 1230 North 27th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2).

On 22 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).

He died on 8 May 1899 (7).

On 27 May 1899, his widow, Grace A E Vanhorn, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
