When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (3, 4).
He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 12 October 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Bowman (2). He was a private in company B (1, 8-10).
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (6).
He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 3, 4 [25 Dec]). He was enlisted for three years by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered by Lieutenant Swan (4).
He was transferred on 1 May 1864 to the US Navy (by general order, War Department) (1, 3, 5, 7). When transferred, he was a private, in company B (8-10).
