Perhaps he is the John Walton in Bates who enlisted on 14 October 1861, and served in company B.

Before the war

He was born in 1837/38 (6 (33 in 1861), 11 (57 in ?1880), 13 (57 in ?1880)). He was born in Germany (11, 13).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 25 November 1861 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowman (5, 7, 8). He was mustered by Captain Kayser (7, 8). He was a private in company B (1, 17-19).

He had returned to the regiment from being absent sick on 22 February 1863 (3).

He was absent sick in the Division Hospital beginning 7 May 1863 (4).

On 18 March 1864, he was released from arrest and restored to duty, but the pay for the time he were absent, transportation, and the reward authorized for deserters, along with the cost of any lost property were deducted from his pay (3).

He was wounded on 10 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia (1, 8, 14). He was absent wounded later that month (15).

He was discharged in October 1864 (10). He was a private, in company B (17-19).

He was dropped from the rolls on 1 July 1865 as a deserter (1, 6, 12).

He had served for thirty-six months (11, 13).

After the war

On 27 January 1876, he successfully applied for a pension (9, 16).

On 9 September 1880, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (11, 13). He had a wounded left arm, and received a pension of $2 per month (11).

In 1882, he was present at the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (11).

In 1890, he was living in the National Military Home in Montgomery County, Ohio (10). He reported no disability (10).

He was admitted from Pennsylvania (13). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (13). He had a gunshot wound in his left leg (13).

He died on 26 February 1898, in the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (9, 13).
