Before the war

He was born in 1842/43 (3 (18 in 1861)). He was born in Northumberland [?] County, Pennsylvania (3).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (3).

During the war

He also served in company M of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (4, 5). He also served in the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry (but was not assigned to a company) (4, 5).

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 12 or 10 November 1861 (1 [10 Nov], 3 [12 Nov], 5 [12 (?) Nov]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Gilbert (3). He was a private in company F (1, 6).

He was discharged at Alexandria, Virginia, on 6 May 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3, 5 [4 (?) May]). He was a private, in company F (6).

After the war

On 24 April 1890, he applied successfully from Indiana for a pension (4, 5).

He died on 29 October 1923, at Sandusky, Ohio (5).

On 16 January 1924, his widow, Catherine Waltman, applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 5).
