Milton Alfred Wertz

Before the war

He was born in November 1838 (7, 10; 2 (20 in 1865), 5 (28 in 1870), 6 (39 in 1880), 7 (61 in 1900), 8 (71 in 1910)). He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania (2, 5, 6, 7, 8).

He married Catharine Ninetta Spangler, about 1861/1862 (7 [38 yrs in 1900], 8 [44 yrs in 1910], 10 [ca 1868]). In 1900 and 1910, she had had seven children, three of whom were alive (7, 8), including (10):

When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted from Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 3, 11). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). His service was credited to the Sixteenth Congressional District (2). He was a private in company G (1, 12-13).

He received clothing worth $38.35 (2).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3, 11). He was a private, in company G (12-13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Catharine and daughters Laura and Emma (5). He was a day laborer, and owned $500 in real estate and $100 in personal property (5).

In 1880, he was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Catharine, and daughters Jennie E, Annie L, and Hester (6). He was a day laborer (6).

In 1890, he was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: New Chester) (3).

On 6 September 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 11).

In 1900, he was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Catharine and daughter Hester Ann, along with Hester's husband George (7). He was a day laborer (7). He had been out of work 10 months in the previous year (7).

On 4 November 1909, he again applied for a pension (11).

In 1910, he was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Catharine (8). He was living on his own income (8).

He died on 15 April 1919, in New Chester, Adams County, Pennsylvania (10, 11).

On 2 May 1919, his widow, Catharine K Wertz, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 11).

In 1920, his widow, Catharine Wertz, was living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her daughter Hester and Hester's husband George (9).
