91st PA: William Wolfgang

William Wolfgang

Note

The pension index suggests I may have the wrong William Wolfgang in the censuses.

Before the war

He was born in January 1846 (5; 2 (18 in 1865), 4 (33 in 1880), 5 (54 in 1900)). He was born in Pennsylvania (2, 4, 5).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 March 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowen (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 9).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3). He was a private, in company H (9).

After the war

In 1874/75, he married Susan M [unknown family name] (5). In 1900 and 1910, she reported having had no children (5). They did adopt at least one child (William), and perhaps another (Mary) (5, 6).

In 1880, he was living in South Butler Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with his wife Susan (4). He was a laborer, and had been unemployed for two months in the previous year (4).

In 1890, he was living in Gordon, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania (3).

On 3 March 1898, he successfully applied for a pension (8).

In 1900, he was living on McKnight Street, in Gordon Borough, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Susan and adopted son [?] William (5). He was a locomotive engineer, but had been out of work twelve months in the previous year (5).

He died in 1909 (8).

On 8 January 1909, his widow, Emma M Wolfgang, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 8).

In 1910, his widow, Susan, was living on McKnight Street, in Gordon Borough, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania (6). She was living with her daughter (sic; perhaps adopted daughter?) Mary (6).
