Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (2, 6, 7). He was born in 1826/27 (2 (37 in 1864), 6 (33 in 1860), 7 (43 in 1870)).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Rebecca, children (?) John and Charles, with Rebecca's family (probably), and others (6). He was a painter (6).

When he enlisted, he was a painter (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a recruit [i.e. a volunteer?] for three years, as a private, in company E, on 21 January 1864, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (1, 2, 11). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Shipley and mustered into service by Lieutenant Hilderburn (2).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning the death of sixteen comrades, and sympathizing with their families (5). He was on the committee (5).

On 16 June 1865, he was promoted, effective 1 June 1865, to corporal (1, 3).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a corporal, in company E (10).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 4, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and children John, Charles, and William (7). He was a painter (7).

In 1880, his widow, Rebecca Yost, was living at 1631 Ninth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). She was living with her children John Alexander and Charles S, with her mother, and with other relatives (8).

His widow, Rebecca Yost, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 24 July 1890 (4, 9).
