91st PA: Theodore Young

Theodore Young

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1841/42. [sources: date: 2 (22 in 1863), 5 (45 in 1887), 9 (28 in 1870), 10 (30 in 1880). place: 5, 9, 10]

During the war

He was drafted. He was mustered into service as a private in the 118th Pennsylvania on 24 July 1863 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in company B of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 7]

He was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania on 1 June 1865. [sources: 1, 2] He was a private in company F of the 91st Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 8, 14]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 2, 14]

After the war

He married Amanda [unknown family name]. She was born in 1839/42, in Pennsylvania. Perhaps they are the Theodore Young and Amanda Wmer who were married on 28 December 1869, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 9, 10]

In 1870, he may have been living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Amanda, and with Charles A, Frances, and Mary Tomes. He owned $300 in personal property. [source: 9]

In 1880, he may have been living at 1538 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Amanda, and with three boarders: Charles and Francis Tomes, and Mary Ely. He was a shoe cutter. [source: 10]

Probably in the fall of 1887, Theodore Young, shoemaker, was living at 2118 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

On 17 December 1887, he died, of phthisis pulmonalis. He was married. He was a shoe cutter. He died at, or was buried from, 2118 Ridge Avenue. On 20 December 1887, he was buried, at Fernwood Cemetery. [sources: 4, 5, 7]

On 25 September 1890, his widow, Catharine A Young, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 3, 4]

Fron 1893 to 1897, an Amanda Young is listed either as a dressmaker at 2937 Susquehanna Avenue, or as the widow of Theodore (1896), at that address. [source: 12]

In 1898, Amanda Young, widow of Theodore, was living at 1324 North 22nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

Perhaps she is the Catharine A Young who died on 12 September 1898, and was buried at Northwood Cemetery. She died of phthisis pulmonalis, at 1324 North 22nd Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]
