Henry Harrington Zane

Before the war

He was born in 1839/40 (7 (22 in 1862), 12 (26 in 1870), 13 (34 in 1880)). He was born in Haddonfield, New Jersey (7, 12, 13).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter (7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (7).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 11 August 1862 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Closson (4). He was a private in company F (1, 16-17).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (9).

He deserted for a short time in 1863 (8).

On 11 June 1863 he was detailed for duty in the ordnance pack train (3).

On 8 September 1863, he returned from the Brigade Hospital (4).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 30 men who had more than fifteen months to serve who were willing to reenlist (2). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (5; 17).

He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, and was in hospital for several months (8, 10 [missing]).

He was discharged on 23 May 1865 (or 1 June 1865), by general order (1 [23 May], 6 [1 June], 7 [23 May]). He was a private, in company F (16-17).

After the war

He married Elizabeth [unknown family name] (12, 13, 14). In 1900, she had had six children, three of whom were alive (14).

In 1870, he was living in the 3rd ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Lizzie, his son Aaron [?], and his daughter Maria (12). He was a range builder (12).

On 14 November 1879, he unsuccessfully applied for a pension (15).

In 1880, he was living at 1441 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Elizabeth and three children (13). He was a machinist (13).

He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1896 (8).

On [blank date] April 1896 [?], his widow, Elizabeth Zane, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (11, 15).

In 1900, his widow, Elizabeth Zane, was living at 9 McNeck Avenue Number 2, ward 7, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her daughter Jannie and Jannie's family (14).
