Before the war

He was born in January [?] 1836 (19; 10 (41 in 1880), 13 (25 in 1861), 14 (27 in ?1863), 17 (33 in 1870), 18 (24 in 1860), 19 (63 in 1900), 20 (73 in 1910), 21 (83 in 1920), 23 (8 in 1850)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23 [NJ]).

In 1850, he was living in Harrison Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey (23). He was living with Lewis and Sarah Zane (presumably his parents), along with others (presumably his siblings (23).

In 1860, he was living in ward 13 of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (18). He was a painter (18). He was living with Sarah Zane (perhaps his mother) and Hannah Conover (18)

When he enlisted, he was a painter, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13, 14).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (13, 14).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 19 September 1861 (1, 13, 14 [as corp], 15, 16). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith (13). He was a private, in company A (1, 17).

He was an outspoken advocate of McClellan--some of the soldiers even called him 'McClellan' until the end of the war (2)! But by the 1864 election, even he had stopped defending McClellan (2).

He returned from duty at Brigade Headquarters on 20 March 1863 (8).

On (or effective) 17 June 1863, he was promoted to 2nd corporal of company A (12).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (22).

On 10 August 1863, he returned to his company, from being absent sick (11).

He was promoted from corporal to first corporal, on 1 October 1863, replacing William Beaver (4).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 14).

In May or June 1864, he lost one Springfield rifle musket and accoutrements (5).

On 17 January 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 1 February 1865 (9). He returned on 3 February [?] (9).

On 27 June 1865, he was promoted on 1 May 1865 from corporal to sergeant (1, 6, 14).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 14, 15, 16). He was a sergeant, in company A (17).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (17). He was a house painter, and owned $1000 in real property and $100 in personal property (17). He was living with his wife Martha (27, born in New Jersey), and four daughters (17):

In 1880, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (10). He was a house painter (10). He was living with his wife Martha Zane (38, born in New Jersey), and his daughters Ida S Zane (15, born in NJ), Florence V Zane (13, born in NJ), Sallie M Zane (12, born in NJ), and Arabella C Zane (10, born in NJ) (10).

In 1890, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (16).

On 21 May 1895, and on 18 February 1907, he applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (7, 15).

In 1900, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (19). He was a painter [?] (19). He was widowed, and was living with his daughters Ida and Virginia (19).

In 1910, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (20). He had no occupation (20). He was probably living in the same house as his daughter Ida and her husband (20).

In 1920, he was living in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey (21). He was retired (21). He was living with his daughter and son-in-law (21). (21).

He died on 23 July 1922 [?], at Salem, New Jersey (15).
