INTRODUCTION TO THE OXLEY FAMILY



New information has come to light recently on some of the members of the Oxley family and it was decided to do a Family Project for Old Dobbers. If anyone has additional information, please feel free to send it to me for the Project. As far as I know this is not my direct line.

We know the Oxley famly most likely came out of Bertie Co, NC probably with the Parrott Family. George Mewborn and his wife Mary Parrott along with Mary's brother, John Parrott, and his wife Elizabeth Oxley moved to Dobbs County from Bertie County. Elizabeth Oxley was the daughter of John and Olive Oxley of Bertie and had siblings John, George, Mary who md Isaiah Johnson (who also moved to Dobbs County), Olive, Rachel who md John Ray, Martha, a daughter who md William Fleetwood, and a daughter who md James Baker. One George Oxley appeared in Dobbs County about the time of the Mewborn, Johnson and Parrott families and it is assumed he was the brother of Elizabeth Parrott.

Due to the loss of records in Dobbs and Lenoir Counties, it is not possible to trace the family with any proof but maybe with the bits and pieces and additional pieces that may come to light, a little more information might be gleaned about the family.

Peter Phillips lived in the Contentnea Neck Township. There were Marriage Bonds for Peter and Martha Sumrell on 19 Jan 1804. Peter's oldest child was Thomas O. Phillips born 10 Jan 1802 two years before Peter married Martha. Researchers think that Peter had a first wife and she may well have been an Oxley and that is what the O. stood for in Thomas' name. Thomas Phillips, father of Peter, had a will written in Craven Co dated 8 Nov 1791 and George Oxley was a WIT and in 1797 one George Oxley was a Chain Bearer on a Phillips deed indicating he was a neighbor.

Information was sent to me regarding Elias G. Oxley buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Camden County, Ga. His stone says he was born near New Bern, NC. It appears I did not keep the email address of the person who sent the cemetery information but he/she also stated there was a Hardy F. Oxley in Randolph County, Ga born in NC. He was on the 1870 Census, aged 36. There was a Hardy Oxley in Lenoir Co in 1832. Camden Co, Ga had a number of people from our area especially Pitt Co and many of the Hardee family are buried in that county.

I have a Harriet and George (abt. 1805) Oxley from Lenoir, North Carolina.
They were the parents of Stephen (our ggfather b. 1839 in Lenoir and wounded
in the Civil War - Co.A, 3rd Regt. North Carolina Infantry [later the 8d
Regt]), Raleigh (b. abt. 1827), George B., Charles (killed at Malvern Hill
1862) and Eveline. There may have been an Olive somewhere in the line,
but we are still searching that one. Our Stephen Oxley married Sarah Simmons
(b. abt. 1839) and they had a daughter, Harriet Olivia Oxley (b. July 1880
- d. Sept 1961). If any of these folks./names might be part of your line,

Ms. Marble, my name is Dewayne Oxley. All of my descendants are from
Lenoir Co. N.C. Your wonderful submissions to the Lenoir site have
given me more information on them, than anyone could imagine. It seems
my descendants, the Byrds', the Oxleys', Daughertys', Parrotts, had
direct contact with the Mewborns'. Maybe you can help me with one
missing part of my ancestral puzzle. I know that the families mentioned
earlier, stayed together basically, and eventually settled in the
Neutral Zone between Texas and Louisiana. Sabine parish was portioned
off from Natchitoches parish in the 1840s. My GGG grandfather was Reuben
Oxley. He was born in Lenoir Co about 1797, according to his army
enlistment papers in 1817 in New Orleans, La. He was a professional
soldier until 1833, retiring from Ft. Jesup near Many, La. We've traced
all of his descendants from Reuben, but no one has ever found his
parents in Lenoir. I believe his father is George Oxley, Jr., son of
George Oxley. In all of your amassed information on Lenoir and it's
inhabitants from 1760 through 1800, have you ever come across Reuben
Oxley. I understand with all the submissions, you must be terribly
busy; but if you could see in your heart to help me, I'd be so very
