Research by Gloria Taylor and Martha Mewborn Marble
Abraham Taylor of Baltimore Co, Md received his first land in NC in
New Bern ca 1733 but there is no indication of what happened to that
land. His first land outside of New Bern was on Southwest Creek in
what is today Lenoir County. Most of the Taylors in what is today
Lenoir Co up to ca 1800 were on SW Creek indicating a possible
connection to old Abraham. Abraham had a Will in Johnston, now Lenoir
Co so we have what is assumed to be a list of his living children at
the time. The only one with birth records who was not mentioned in
the Will was Isaac so it can only be assumed that Isaac had died
probably without heirs. There were only two grandchildren listed in
the will &endash; Abraham and Dinah. Who the rest were is pure
speculation. This is an effort to try and sort whom the grandchildren
were by where they lived although it is not going to be possible to
determine the fathers. It is entirely possible some of Abraham's
relatives moved into the area also.
Our Taylors lived within walking distance of where Old Abraham had
his first land and although the names found in Abraham's children are
not found in our family, there has to be a connection. Old Abraham
had a brother, John, so even though if Abraham had a son John, we are
not aware of it, the name John is a shared common name.
The biggest problem Gloria and I have had is the numerous land
patents for this family on Southwest Creek in CRAVEN Co. To our
knowledge, SW Creek was never in Craven Co once Johnston Co was
formed unless there was a boundary change we are not aware of. For
the time being, we are assuming the patent people did not know which
County SW Creek was in. SW Creek cuts across the entire County and
there was Taylor land south of that area near the Trent River on
Tuckahoe. There was also a Taylor family in Greene Co that were
neighbors of the Davis family where the name James was used. It is
impossible to tell if the entries in the Cross Indices between James
Davis and William Taylor were the ones in todays Greene or Lenoir
Counties.
These entries are from Hoffman, Murphy and Pruitt. Some are the same
and some may be different as there are slightly different dates. The
only entries in the early Pruitt Book are for Jacob. Neither Gloria
nor I have access to that book at this time and we don't know if
there is a middle book.
