Elmore Hugh Palmer

Jeff Palmer's Grandfather

Elmore Hugh Palmer was born 18 Jan. 1877 in Peabody, Marion Co. KS, to John Newton and Mary Catherine (Cross) Palmer. Elmore helped his father farm in Marion Co. while growing up. About 1910 or so, he moved out to Seward Co. KS and worked for his future father in law, William Ormiston. Elmore married Margaret Ormiston on 18 Dec. 1912 in Meade, KS. They farmed and in Meade and Seward Counties in Kansas. In 1918, they heard about some federal land opening up for farming in Baca Co. CO and moved out there. The land was too arid to work in Colorado so they came back to Kansas in 1923. Elmore and Margaret had ten children, four boys and six girls. In 1928, he was on a horse drawn road maintainer and it hit something in the ground and threw him off. He was never able to work again. His paralysis gradually got worse and he died on 16 July 1938 in Liberal, Seward Co. KS and is buried at Kismet, Seward Co. KS.

Charles Elmore Palmer
b. 28 Feb. 1919

He was born in a dugout in Edler, Baca Co. Colorado to Elmore Hugh and Margaret Ormiston Palmer. Edler is in the very southeast corner of the state. Story goes that he never saw a car until he was about 5 years old when the family moved back to Seward County, KS. He served his country in WWII. He was a member if the 300th Combat Engineers, US Army. His campaigns were Normandy, Northern France, Alsace-Ardennes, and Central Europe. He came back from the war got married to Lorene Hight of Arkansas City, KS on 22 Nov. 1945 and finished his college at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. He taught school in Kensington, KS and later worked for Trunkline Gas Company from 1950 to 1963. They moved back and forth from Illinois to Texas. In 1963, he then came to Arkansas City, KS and became city engineer. He died 7 Mar. 1973 from an sudden heart attack.

John Newton Palmer

Jeff's G-Grandfather

John Newton Palmer was born 22 Nov. 1846 to James Harvey and Arabella (Cryder) Palmer in London, Madison Co. OH. He farmed in Madison Co when he was young. He moved out to Clinton, Dewitt Co. IL in the mid 1860's. He taught school and was a choir leader in the Christian (Disciples of Christ ) Church. He married Mary Catherine Cross on 9 Sept. 1868 in Clinton, IL. About 1870, the family moved out to Marion Co. KS. John and Mary had 9 children. In 1905, John's wife, Mary, died. John moved on and came to Seward County, KS to be closer to his children. On 15 March 1930, while living in Liberal, KS, John was hit by a car while crossing a street and died from his injuries . He was buried next to his wife in Marion, KS.
