WELLS ALLIS, son of Wells and Harriet Bell Allis, was born in Darien, Conn., December 29, 1837; when the Civil War broke out, it found him an officer in Company F., Third Conn., Regiment, residing in Stamford, Conn. He enlisted under the first call for troops as First Lieut. in Co. F, 3rd Connecticut, and went with it to the front for three months and was mustered out at the end of his term. During this term of service he took part in the memorable First Battle of Bull Run, Va., in which battle the Captain was killed; at the close of the battle he had the honor of leading his Company off the field in good order with all their arms, although the retreat was a disastrous one to the Union side. After his return from this service, he again enlisted, this t ime a Captain of Co. C, 95th Regiment, Ohio, Vol. Inf. At the siege of Vicksburg he was wounded and taken prisoner, which forced his absence from his company about one year.

FRANKLIN WELLS ALLIS, son of Lucy (Tomlinson) and Capt. Wells Allis, was born in Stamford, Conn., November 25, 1874. After leaving his home schools, he entered the Yale Scientific School, graduating in 1896, while in Yale he took a very active part in athletics. He represented Yale in the intercollegiate track and field championship of 1896, and won the pole vault, and later as a member of the N. Y. Y. M. C. A., he won the Metropolitan A. A. U. championship at pole vaulting, his winning height being 11 feet 7 inches. "The best record in pole vaulting was made on June 12, 1908, being 12 feet, 9 1/2 inches.
