Subject: [VT-L] Marguerite Allis Books

Ruth Barton and Everybody else. Here are 14 of the 15 books Marguerite Allis
wrote and published. I thought I had them all, but when I count, one's missing.

I'm wondering if someone else remembers who that was who came to talk in
Vernon about Miss Allis' interst in history. It appears Miss Allis lived in
New Haven CT most of her life, but still was proud to say she was a Vermont
native (born here), for the inscriptions in her books I found at the Ludlow
Fletcher Memorial Library say it, see below. These books, by the way, have
now given way to newer, more modern books, and are kept on a top shelf in
the downstairs section of Ludlow's library, requiring special help to get them.

These words taken from Connecticut Trilogy, (1934) second impression
January 1935 volume in Fletcher Memorial Library written by the author: "It
gives me much pleasure to autograph for the Fletcher Library this copy of my
first published book which herewith becomes a part of the collection given
by Mr. And Mrs. Rufus Hemenway in memory of Abby Maria Hemenway who, like
me, was born in Ludlow. Marguerite Allis October 1943"

English Prelude 1936
Connecticut River 1939
Not Without Peril 1941
The Splendor Stays 1942
All In Good Time, 1944 G. P. Putnam's Sons New York
Water Over The Dam, 1947 G. P. Putnam's Sons New York Bookplate: "In memory
of Abby Maria Hemenway - born in Ludlow, Vt. Oct. 7, 1828, died in Chicago,
IL. Feb. 24, 1890, author of Vermont Historical Gazetteer"
Charity Strong 1945
The Bridge 1949 A novel.
Now We Are Free 1952 G. P. Putnam's Sons New York, also published in Canada
by Thomas Allen Ltd. Toronto.
To Keep Us Free 1953
Brave Pursuit,
The Rising Storm,
Free Soil published 1958, and probably Miss Allis' final book, is inscribed
"To G. P. Putnam's Sons publishers of my first book in 1934 and since that
time of all my books of which this is the fifteenth." It was published in
Canada by Longmans, Green, & Company, Toronto.

Marguerite Allis died in New Haven CT in 1958.
