Hugh lived in Scotland and immigrated to America before Pre-Revolutionary War,and perhaps to Virginia first with several children. James Bankhead as our ancestor is one of these children.

William Bankhead's Will---Brother to James Bankhead,married to Elizabeth Black


In the name of God amen. The 29th day of February 1812, I William Bankhead of Harford County the state of Maryland and--- being weak in body but sound of memory and understanding to ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner. First of all I resign my soul unto the hands of my gracious redeemer who died for sinners. As for my worldly affairs, I dispose of them in the manner following: Viz., to my brother Hugh Bankhead I bequeath the plantation wherein I now live called William to him and his heirs forever. Likewise all my Negroes.
Viz., Ginny aged 29 years who is to be free in six months after my decease. Mary, who was born Nov. the 21st 1811 is to be free at 18 years of age. John who was born May 31st 1805 is to be free at the age of 21. Rebecca who was born Feb.2nd 1808 is to be free at 18 years of age. Peter who was born Jan 9th 1810 is to be free at the age of 21 years. Bobb who is to be free is six years from the 28th day of March. Likewise all my horses, cows,sheep, household furniture,farming utensils.
To my sister Elizabeth Good and her children I bequeath one hundred dollars. To my sister in law Elizabeth Bankhead and her children I bequeath one hundred dollars. To my sister Jane Wilson and her children I bequeath six dollars. To my sisters daughters Mary Almoney and Elizabeth Wilson I bequeath twelve dollrs each. To my sister Martha Kent's children I bequeath twelve dollars. To my brother John Bankhead I bequeath 24 dollars the above legacies all to be paid by my brother Hugh Bankhead in four years after my decease. I also appoint my brother Hugh Bankhead and John Kirkwood the whole and sole executors of this my last will and statement.
