According to the "Dictionary of Alabama Biography", John and his wife Letitia
"came to Alabama From Union District S.C.,and settled in Marion Co,where he established a plantation home at the site of old Moscow. A colonel in the military,standing 6 ft 4in.,a progressive planter and sound scholar,bringing into his wilderness home a library of classics,died in1867,and both are buried in the Armstrong graveyard." On the 1860 census of Marion County he listed as age 69,with$3,500.00 in real estate and $18,000 in personal estate; "Luticia" is 65; both born in South Carolina.
