Richard Marion Bankhead, son of George W. Bankhead and Elizabeth M. , was born May 03,1825 in Alabama. He married Mary Frances Bankhead 1864 in Walker Co., Texas. He died July 27, 1884 in Huntsville, Walker Co., Texas. Mary Frances Bankhead, daughter of Richard Bankhead and Sarah Leah Noble , was born December 18, 1830 in Tipton Co., Tennessee. She died January 03, 1902 in Walker Co., Texas.

This Richard Marion is a brother to William Christel. Sarah Nobles married George Lamb and had a daughter named Susan that married this Richard Marion Bankhead.

Richard became Director of the State Penitentiary at Huntsville,Walker County,Texas, according to his oath, signed 6 March 1870. At this same time he was also Justice of the Peace for Walker County,his bond having been signed 29 April 1870; Oath,2 May 1870. He was awarded a Third Class Land Grant, which he located in Freestone County,Texas,in 1856, and sold the 7th of August of the same year,to W.W. Oliver. Richard M.Bankhead served in A.C. Timmons Regiment of the Texas infantry ( formed by consolidation of the 1st and 3rd infantry Battalions,Waul's Texas Legion,March 1864), during the War Between the States.


Cemetery records from Walker Co., Texas indicate that there was at least one son born in addition to the daughter listed, for we find these inscriptions:

Lillian July 1891-Aug.1891
Richard Marion 1889-1952.....undoubtly grandchildren of Richard Marion Bankhead.

According to the 1870 Texas, Walker County census, Richard was a 45 year old farmer and had 1000 acres.

Mary Frances has not been positively identified as a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Nobles) Bankhead,there is every possibility that she could have been.
Jan. 10,2000--Kay Ponder of Texas, and a direct descendent of Mary Frances.
Has in her posession a copy of the family Bible of Sarah Noble, where it lists all five children,dates of
birth,and what county/state they were born in.
