LETTER to Jackie WILLHOIT from BOB ROTH
Feb. 18, 1980 Franklin, Ohio
Dear Jackie,

I think that you put me in that same boat about my letter having so much, that you didn't know where to start to answer it, but that's the kind of letters I enjoy receiving, and the kind I enjoy answering.

I appreciate all the trouble that you went to, to get the copies of Jessie DANIEL's letters for me. I have studied them ever since they arrived. They are very interesting and I believe I have learned quite a bit from them. The facts contained, are unable to be obtained any other way and you know that's where you get the best clues.

Your saying that your sisters looked like your Grandma Virginia, I think that all comes from the Brothers marrying Sisters. They really have reason to resemble. My Dad looked exactly like Thomas J. ROTH's son, Harold. I saw them together and you would have thought that they were twins. That's the reason I'm trying to get all the pictures for my album, that I can, of the members of our family. I'll anxiously await the pictures that you intend to send.

Yes, the rooms in the (EUBANK) Mansion are large, but I believe the main reason for not being able to get the home in one picture is because of the rolling terrain and the fence that they have so close, to what, I think is the front of the house. The pictures that we have, I believe was taken from the back of the house. The other side has the native stone, with two side by side large doors for the entrance thru which we entered.

The weather here has been kind of bad for traveling, but I sit here planning what I want to do when the weather does get better and I get flustered about which way to go first. There is so much that I want to do and we'll enjoy every minute of it.

I think you were jokeing when you said for me to come up with a picture of the Illinois home, but don't think I haven't thought about trying! I know just about the general vicinity of the house, so all that remains is up to me. I don't know if they built things in Illinois to last like they did in Kentucky or not.

I do know that Thomas B. ROTH built one of the first buildings in Redmon, Ill. that I tried to find last summer, with no success. I'm not saying that it isn't still there, because I didn't spend to much time trying. He built the building in 1876 and at the time the history of the town was written the building was occupied by some kind of a store.

Now, back to the EUBANK home. I had found out that the house was in a large park in Covington so with the picture, I said to Elsie, "Let's go down to Covington and see what we can find." We we spent the whole day down there. If you have a road atlas with the city of Covington, it shows the park which is DEVOU Park. The people in Covington pronounce it Devoo. The house is known as the Montague Home, which is on a plaque, as you start up the drive-way. I'd say the location is just about the center of the city, and I also would estimate that there are several hundred acres in the park, and I believe the only house actually in the park. In the summertime the park would be beautiful with all the trees.

I haven't been able because of the weather to do much this winter, but I do have a copy of the deed to the property, showing that James Taylor EUBANK bought it in July 24, 1845 and I find that he sold it to a Miss Louisa Jane DEVOU in 1867. See, I KNEW that it was in 1867, that they moved to Illinois. That was the same year that James Taylor died in Edgar County, Ill. In 1867 that was exactly 10 years after Thomas B. arrived with his family.

The place in Kentucky was known as the Bacon Run Property, and he bought it from the heirs of a Joseph G. KING.

From this we know that all but one of the EUBANK kids were born in that house. Ain't that sumpin'?

Now, don't you see why I get all excited and flustered when I think about what I want to do as soon as the weather opens up? After I get done what I have in my mind Jackie, I'll send you copies of the material, and let you become as thrilled and enjoy it as I have. Just be patient and we'll work it all out.

I don't have the proof yet, but I know that Mary E. EUBANK or Mary Ann ?? was out of money also. She was an heir to an estate, which James Taylor bought also. So just hang loose, You Cousin, Bob (Written in longhand below his signature, presumably by Jackie:) "I wonder about this letter. It has typing errors that I have never noticed in his others & the tomne is different. I hope he isn't sick."
