    Project background:
To help those working on P-rr-tt genealogy, this is an on-going effort to catalog all the P-rr-tt families of North America in one site, and to assist with the interpretations of an ongoing P-rr-tt Surname Y-DNA project. The current goals are to:

    • Define which P-rr-tt families are related to each other
    • Connect with the corresponding P-rr-tt families in Europe, Australia, and elsewhere

    • 103 Family patriarchs have been identified for 131 branches. Of these
    • 28 Branches (>100 men) have been Y-DNA-tested, and they fall into
    • 16 Distinct families

Y-DNA testing can help fill in the gap where paper records are not available. Thus far, most of the DNA testing has been of the Southern families, which has made it possible to determine which families are related to each other as part of a larger family. DNA testing is most lagging for the Northeast and Midwest families. Nevertheless, already, it is clear from DNA testing that the USA P-rr-tt surname [derived from the French for little Peter, i.e., Peterson; alternatively a dweller near the Perrott river] is used by many unrelated families.

To participate in this study, make sure the test is a Y-DNA test! There are now many types of DNA tests available. The tests sold by Ancestry and 23&Me are primarily atDNA tests, and as such cannot pinpoint family lines the way Y-DNA does.

Overview of Parrotts in the USA:
Y-DNA testing has made it clear that today, the majority of P-rr-tts in North America trace back to just 7 of the original immigrant families: William of Talbot Co., Richard Perrott of Middlesex Co., Lawrence Perrott of Gloucester/Mathews Co., Needham Perrit from the Carolinas, Francis Parrott from North Carolina, Frederick Parrott of Shenandoah Co., and Albert Parot, a French Canadian whose descendants settled in New York and Vermont. All the other early P-rr-tt families have far fewer descendants. Several African-American families began to appear after the Civil War, though these have remained small. In addition, there has been a steady stream of P-rr-tt families arriving from England, France, and a few other countries.

1600s: The first P-rr-tt families settled in the Colonies in the 1600s, and their descendants account for 39% of living Parrotts in the US today. At least 6 families became established during this period, 2 in the North, and 4 in the South. It is evident from the records several other P-rr-tts visited the colonies, but there is no evidence any of them established families. Two of the Southern families became gigantic. Today, the descendants of Richard make up 19% of all the Parr-tts in the USA, while those of Lawrence make up 12%. Two other families - that of William and that of Francis - became very large, and today account for 3 and 4% of living Parrotts, respectively.

1700s: Some 19 family groups arrived in the 1700s, and collectively account for 22% of Parr-tts in the US today. The family of Frederick is the largest of the group, and makes up some 6% of living Parr-tts, followed by the Needham group at 4%. A group out of Granville, North Carolina, comes in at 2%.

1800s: The 1800s saw rash in immigration, with some 56 families appearing during this century. Yet, these recent immigrants just lead to 19% of today's P-rr-tts. This group also includes African-American families appearing after the Civil War. A group out of Lincolnshire is the largest family in this group, comprising 2% of today's families. The rest of the families from this period have remained very small.

1900s: The 1900's saw a marked decline in immigration. Although some 10 families are known to have arrived, they barely make up 2% of living Parr-tts.

These statistics will change as more information comes in. It is likely that many of the families tabulated as separate groups will be shown to belong to the same family as more paper records are found or more Y-DNA results come in. Note that only 1/3 of names surveyed consist of males born with the Parr-tt surname; a 1/3 are females born Parr-tts, and 1/3 are females who acquired their surname through marriage.

How many P-rr-tt families are in North America today? There are still some 80 lines that are Y-DNA untested, and this number will undoubtedly collapse into fewer but larger families as more families get tested. Still, as many as 50 different families is a rough guesstimate. What is certain is that the era when P-rr-tts were considered to be 'Kinsmen all,' as proclaimed in Links that Bind, is long over.

Methods: "Parrott" obituaries appearing between 2014-2018 in Obits.com and Legacy.com were monitored, and the deceased was placed in their proper family, including all P-rr-tt spelling variants. A total of 645 obituaries were tabulated during this time. Still, 15% of the deceased have not been placed in their corresponding family, which is why the percenages by century do not add up to 100%.

The Southern families are among the oldest and largest P-rr-tt families, and different branches parted ways long ago. In addition, several African-American Parrott families start appearing after the Civil War. Today, Most Parrotts/Parretts in the Midwest and the West Coast have Southern roots, so they are not listed above. DNA testing has made it possible to start assigning branches to their correct family tree.

    Individual families:

    - Descendants of Anthony Parrott, b 1864
    Family ID #: 090
This is another of the most poorly documented families. The family appears after the Civil War, and is primarily identified with Darlington county in South Carolina. There are other African-American Parrott families in the county, but thus far, the existing paper record does not connect them. Only a Y-DNA test will be able to tell if they are related or not.
    - Descendants of Augustine Parrott, b late 1700's
    Family ID #: 042
The first records of this family are in King George Co., Virginia. From there they moved to Mathews Co., home to another Parrott family. Whether this move was concidental or represents a kinship is unknown. In the absence of a paper trail, Y-DNA is needed. This family is best known for its association with Parrott, Virginia, and its coal mine.

    - Descendants of Bryant & William Parrott, b ~ 1832
    Family ID #: 091
This family was started by two brothers, Bryant and William. It is one of the few African-American families that has records that predate the Civil War. Even so its origins are unclear, as the 1880 US census gives the birth place for Bryant as North Carolina, while the 1900 census gives it as South Carolina. His son Wesley's death certificate lists Bryant as being born in Darlington Co., South Carolina. SC census records have the brothers born in North Carolina. Today, the family is primarily identified with Darlington county in South Carolina. There are other African-American Parrott families in the county, but thus far, the paper record does not connect them. Only a Y-DNA test will be able to tell if they are related or not.
    - Descendants of Charles Parrott, b ~1865
    Family ID #: 044
This family appears after the Civil War, and is primarily identified with Darlington county in South Carolina.
