He died on 12 October 1907 at the age of 70 in Carroll County, Arkansas, United States. 9,10,130,141 Obituary:
October 26, 1907, Saturday, CASSVILLE DEMOCRAT, Barry Co., MO.
An old Citizen Dies: Uncle Henry Ambrose of Urbanette, one of the oldest citizens of the county, died at his home last Sunday morning. He was about 75 years of age and a large portion of his long life had been spent in this county. Berryville, Ark. Starr. He was the father of the many Ambrose boys that formerly resided in that section; and was also the father of the late John Ambrose who was sent to the "pen" from this county. [Transcr. Danette Robinette]
Henry was buried in Jones Cemetery, Urbanette, Carroll County, Arkansas.9, 142 In 1858, he moved to Daviess County, Missouri. A year or two after his marriage, he returned to Kentucky allegedly for his health. He enlisted in the Union Army from Kentucky, but after his discharge, he returned to Missouri and settled at Radical in Stone County. In 1875, he moved to Carroll County, Arkansas, along with several other members of the family from Kentucky. For eight years, he was postmaster at Polo, Arkansas. In 1889, Henry C., and his sons William M., Frank, and Clem relocated to Stone County, Missouri. Henry's farm consisted of 180 acres, located twenty miles south of Galena on White River. In 1890, Henry filed for a pension for his military service. A $10 per month pension was granted beginning 27 Jun 1890. In 1894, he was Justice of the Peace of James Township. The 1900 Census shows Henry and his sons located in James and Williams Townships. Henry was a Primitive Baptist and a Democrat (former Whig).

While Henry appears to have been a law abiding citizen and a pillar of the community, the family farm sat on the Arkansas-Missouri border, and as young men, Henry's sons Frank, John and Bill spent many nights in local jails on both sides of the State line. They must have been a sore trial to their father Henry, who posted bail for them on several occasions.

Henry Clark AMBROSE and Emaline B. "Emily" SLATER were married on 25 November 1858 in nr Knoxville, Ray County, Missouri.10,38,47,142,143,144 State of Missouri )

I certify that on the 25th day of November 1858, was by me lawfully joined together in marriage Ebenezer Keeson and Martha Sheffield, and also Henry C. Ambrose & Emalene B. More all of the County of Ray and State aforesaid. Given under my hand this 25th day of January, 1859. Simon Crown, J. P.
Filed for record 26th January 1859. Emaline B. "Emily" SLATER47,145 was born on 16 March 1844 in Raytown, Ray County, Missouri.9,45,130 She died on 3 June 1909 at the age of 65 in Carroll County, Arkansas, United States. 130,142 She was buried in Jones Cemetery, Urbanette, Carroll County, Arkansas. 130 Emily was also known as Emaline B. Moore. 130 Documentation for Emily's parents has not been found. Reminiscent History Of The Ozark Region, pub. Goodspeed Brothers, Chicago 1894 says: "In 1858 he [Henry C. AMBROSE] came to Daviess County, Missouri, and the following year was married in Ray County, to Miss Emily Slater, a native of Ray County, and the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Moore) SLATER."

A Thomas SLATER appears on the 1850 Census in Ray County, but his household does not contain Catherine or a daughter named Emily. The census also shows he was born in Ohio. On the 1880 and 1900 census, Emily indicates both her parents were born in Tennessee.

Descendants of Henry and Emily relate family stories that Emily spent time on an Indian Reservation. If true, that may explain why we have been unable to find her on the 1850 Census.

Following her husband's death, Emaline applied for a Widow's Pension in December 1907. She claimed to be 63 years old, and to have been the only wife of Henry. She owned four acres of land, mostly in cultivation, a three room house, farm buildings, two filly colts, one cow, one calf, one yearling calf, and her household goods. She valued her house and land at $250, and the stock at $160. She also had a savings in the bank of $575, which earned her 4% interest. Her yearly income was $50 and no person was bound for her support. Emaline was granted a pension of $12 per month.

Henry Clark AMBROSE-10621 and Emaline B. "Emily" SLATER-10622 had the following children:

Copy courtesy Danette Robinette: "From Sheriff Maples we learn the participants of the killing of John Ambrose by F.S. Helt when he gave himself into custody. Ambrose was paying his attention to one of Helt's girls. Helt was very much opposed to this and at the picnic at Carr Lane, Missouri on that day, he so informed Ambrose and it seems that trouble was adverted by Helt taking his girls home early in the day. In the afternoon, Helt took his twenty-two rifle and made a stroll around the farm, hunting, looking after the fence, etc., and upon his return he chanced to come upon Ambrose and two of his daughters out in the woods. Ambrose at once fired two shots from a 45 pistol taking effect only in Helt's clothing, whereupon Helt fired two shots, the second one striking Ambrose just below the collar bone. Ambrose expressed his regret to the girls that he had no doubt shot their father to pieces, also saying that he, himself, was slightly shot. He then mounted his horse and riding about 50 yards, fell off, living but a short time afterward. Helt at once proceeded to Berryville and gave himself up to the officers.

"Ambrose is known to a great many of our people as he was a conspicuous figure in our circuit courts until he was finally sentenced to the penitentiary where he served a five year sentence. At his preliminary examination in Berryville Monday, Helt was released on the grounds of self-defense."

He was buried in Jones Cemetery, Urbanette, Carroll County, Arkansas.9 Jul 1886 - Threatens to shoot Joseph Reynolds. Fined by Justice of the Peace.
May 1887 - Indicted for Bribery, offering to bribe jurors to acquit his brother Bill in the trial for the shooting of John CARR.
Mar 1889 - Tried and found guilty of Arson. Sentenced to 5 years in the Missouri State Penitentiary. Served 23 Mar 1889 to 11 Jan 1893.

It has been suggested that the William arrested with Frank for the murder of A. C. Garrett was a cousin instead of a brother as suggested by contemporary records.

Frank had two cousins named William. Francis Marion's son was born in Oct 1877. He would have been only 10 or 11 years old at the time of the burning of the TERRY barn, and 11 when Cull GARRETT was killed. His involvement in either event is unlikely.

The second cousin who has been seriously suggested is John W.'s son born Feb. 1861, who was certainly old enough to be involved, but lived over 200 miles away in Daviess County, Missouri.

Contemporary newspaper accounts consistently identify the William arrested with Frank as a brother, and give his age as 20 in the Springfield Express article dated 1 Mar 1889. John W.'s William was almost a decade older and William's penitentiary records state he has a "brother in this prison" at the time he was admitted.

Since it was Henry Clark who routinely posted bond for William as well as Frank, it is reasonable to assume that the contemporary records correctly identified Frank and William as brothers.
