THE LEAVING OF LINCOLNSHIRE
Hearing
stories of the rich pickings to be made in the industrial climes of the
North
East
where millions of tons of ironstone
were being mined in the Cleveland
hills
- and the plight of agricultural workers getting worse daily -Westoby
decided to make the trip North, putting his wife and young children on the
train and walking over one hundred miles across country to arrive in Boosebeck
-
joining his brothers-in-law ;- Barnett,
Edwin
and Walter
Beel
to use his skills as a wheelwright and becoming an accomplished joiner in
the local ironworks.

There appear to be 3 ironstone miners, two of them Jane Sleight's brothers, working in the famous Boosebeck Ironstone mine :NZ 658 168 Shafts ( 2 ) 288 feet Main Seam - Ironstone 3' 6'' Dogger 1' 11'' Ironstone 3' 0'' - which was abandoned in May 1887 when an inrush of water which made the mine unworkable . Earlier in 1882 and 1883, there was extensive damage caused to Boosebeck village, due to mining subsidence, some 700 people made homeless as a result. Walker's air powered rotary drills were used to work the stone.
