This is what I have pieced together on the Pate's from Leicestershire, England.

(1) Edward Pate (1503-1593) and wife, Katherine (1510-1593) are buried in the
floor of the church at Melton Mowbray, Eng. At the bottom of their tombs are
the likenesses of 11 children, male and female, supposedly their children.
I tried to get a good picture of the tomb, but standing over it to take the
picture, the most prominent part of the picture were my shoes!
Edward Pate of Eyekettleby, one of the masters to the mint to King Henry VIII,
died 1593, age 90, md Catharine.

(2) On the List of Inquisitions, 39th year of Elizabeth (1597) was Edward Pate of
Leicester Co; He was feifed of his manor.
(Notice this is also the year of his death - was he perhaps
sentenced to death? JPLee)

Edward Pate (1532) willed his property to his grandson, Edward Pate,
"son & heir of my son Henry Pate" - if he dies without heirs, it goes to his
brother John Pate. Edward Pate (1583) died without heirs and the property
went to Sir John Pate who md Elizabeth Skipwith.

(3) I have seen so many claiming Sir John Pate as their direct ancestor, however,
from all records found so far, this cannot be true. From an address given to the
Leicestershire Archaeological Society in 1874 by Thomas North, he states:
"JOHN PATE, of Sysonby, was created a Baronet in 1643 by Charles I, BUT DYING
WITHOUT A SON, in 1652, the title became extinct."

Sir John Pate did have two sons who attended the University of Cambridge
(From ALUMNI CANTABRIGIENSES); Henry Pate, son and heir of John of Sysonby,
Leic, attended in 1635, died unmarried before 1652; Edward Pate, 2nd son of John
of Sysonby, attended in 1639, and died before 1652.

Now as to MY THEORY ---
(4) I think the Richard Pate (1601) was probably the one that came to America

(5) His nephew, JOHN PATE (1633-1673) was Richard's administrator

(6) JOHN PATE's nephew, THOMAS PATE (1652- ) was John's administrator.

This THOMAS PATE (1652) COULD BE the Thomas Pate who md Elizabeth, and
children shown in the Abingdon Parish Register. (See Chart VA-5)

As always, any corrections or additions are welcome.
